Excerpt from: Daria in the Background

“Scissor Wizard,” Jane considered. “I can actually use a new pair of scissors.”

Daria looked at the coupon she got. “Cuter Computer. I suppose I could get a game or two.”

“Doo Dad?” Brittany asked. “What’s that?”

Mrs. Bennet gave out assignments to the students. “Daria and Andrea, you’ll observe traffic patterns at the food concessions, and Kevin and Brittany, you will study and report back on shrinkage.”

“What’s shrinkage?” Kevin asked.

“Shrinkage is the retailing term for shoplifting. I'd like you to analyze its economic impact. Does everyone else understand their assignments?”

She reminded them to meet back at that area at 2:45. After some confusion caused by Kevin ineffectually coming up with a mnemonic device she implored the class to write it down.

Andrea looked at Daria as the class scattered. “Traffic patterns at the food concessions. Sounds good,” she said.

“Let’s go,” Daria murmured.

The two of the then walked along awkwardly. ‘It’s like she doesn’t want to get to know me,’ Andrea thought. She wasn’t sure what to make of that.

Elsewhere. Daria’s sister, Quinn and her friends had skipped school, and were looking for ‘unfashionable’ people to make over.

Stacy Rowe noticed a couple of girls who’d be perfect.

“Wow, you’re right. They need help,” Tiffany Blum-Deckler responded.

“Especially the one on the left. She really needs volumizer. And maybe some subtle streaks,” Quinn said.

“I’m not going to do more than one or two!”

“But you might choose one which would take up a lot of time.”

“That is my choice, Sandi!” Quinn shot back.

Reverse Map Game 2022 - 2012

North America

Canada

The Laurentian Referendum was already controversial. That the vote is for abolition by a majority of 57% leads to unrest. The province is absorbed into Quebec…

United States

In Waco, Texas the Gaia Commune is declared to be a dangerous cult after reports of strange practices surface. This leads to a seven-week stand-off with the ATF and FBI...

Less than 10 native speakers of Floridan Spanish remain.

Hilary Clinton is elected to be Barak Obama’s successor as POTUS.

Mexico

The Anarchist rebellion in Durango is defeated. But the drug cartels move back in soon afterwards.

Central America

Nicaragua withdraws from the Tuxtla Association. It is but the latest country to do so.

After much discussion Brazil gives Macau to China. (See below.)

Europe

In the United Kingdom, the process of moving the capital from Nottingham to London is complete.

Norway again votes against joining the European Union. The existing agreements would remain in force.

Austria holds its fourth independence referendum. The official result is 55% No, 45% yes. Like the previous referenda the German Federal Government is accused of rigging the vote.

Slovakia and Croatia join the European Union.

Africa

In the Central African Republic, the last of the former Central African Empire forces are defeated.

Treaty of Cabinda. Cabinda is transferred from Brazilian to Angolan rule.

Zimbabwe rejoins the Commonwealth.

Asia

The Rojava region rises up against the Assad regime.

For decades China had been insisting that Brazil and Malaysia hand over Macau and Hong Kong respectively to them. After the events of the previous year, both nations hold referendums. It is up to the people themselves to decide.

The Chinese government protests about this strongly, but those in Beijing are certain that the result would come out in their favour.

Macau holds its referendum in late January. The result is 58% in favour of independence from Brazil, which those voting knew would also mean annexation by China.

Although Brazil and China had already been negotatiating prior to this, the referendum allowed more frank discussion to take place. For independence wouldn't take effect immediately.

Beijing had already proposed the 'One nation, two systems' system some time before, to allay Brasilia and Kuala Lumpur's concerns about human rights. As such the discussions would be about what this system would entail for Macau.

Hong Kong hold’s it’s referendum in April. Thus, it is annexed to the Peoples Republic of China by the end of the year.

Convergence on Lawndale - Part 4

Quinn arrived at the portal, where she found the Doctor waiting on the other side.

“So?” he asked.

“There is information on Lawndale.”

“And?”

“It matches what I know,” Quinn answered.

“It may be the same Earth, but in the future,” the Doctor groused. “There is potential for cross temporal problems here.”

“So, we wait for Daria?”

The Doctor thought for a moment. “She’s still heading back to the TARDIS. We can meet her part way, on her way back.”

“We’re going to leave the portal?” Quinn asked.

“We’ll come right back.”

Quinn nodded. They then left the portal.

Daria was a third of the way home, when she heard something. She hid behind a bush. Sure, Lawndale was mostly safe, but growing up in Highland had left her with a well-developed situational awareness. ‘Which is certainly true of Quinn as well,’ she thought, considering that trait would serve her well on her adventures with the Doctor. She slowly moved around the bush, uncertain as to what had caused that sound. ‘It could be anything,’ she thought. Were there other portals opening in Lawndale? She hoped not.

After several minutes, she warily continued on her way.

Kim, Ron and Rufus arrived at the location in the Memorial Park. “It looks like some kind of portal,” Ron guessed.

“A portal?” Kim asked. “Let’s have a closer look before we jump to conclusions.”

“Of course,” Ron said.

They moved closer to the phenomenon. “I think you’re right.” Kim said after looking around it. “It seems to lead to another park where it’s night time.” She brought out the Kimmunicator and took photos of the park and night sky on the other side. “We many need to go through.”

“Are you sure?” Ron asked.

“Yes. We need to have a look at the stars. The light from our side is far too bright.”

“I knew you would say that.”

“Wade, the phenomenon is a portal. We’re going to investigate so we’re going to be out of range for a short while.”

“Understood, Kim.”

“it’s night time on the other side. Could you switch the rear cameras to astrophoto mode?”

“Of course.”

Once on the other side, Kim put some distance between herself and the portal. Even with the moonlight she was sure she would be able to get a fix on the stars. She quickly found the North Star. ‘There’s also the light pollution, but that can’t be helped,’ she thought.

She took several photos. ‘That should be enough for Wade to get a fix on this location.’

“Kim. I think this place is in America,” Ron divulged.

“The plants?” she asked.

“Yes,” Ron answered.

“Given that we’re in the northern hemisphere, the signs in English, and the plants that look similar to those in Middleton. It could also be Canada or the British Isles.”

“Of course.”

Kim took more photos of the area of the sky around the Moon, including, knowing that would help in determining the time and location.

Wade looked at the astrophotos Kim had taken and fed them into his software. “The location is approximately 40 degrees north,” he said a moment later.

“What about the longitude?” Ron asked.

“That is a lot more difficult to determine,” Wade answered.

“So it could be anywhere along that latitude, where there’s land?” Kim considered.

“Somewhere in America, yes,” Wade answered.

“And the time?” Kim asked.

“That’s significantly trickier. Even with the Moon and its phase, there is the Metonic Cycle which repeats every 19 years. It wouldn’t help. You would need to find a newspaper.”

“Thanks, Wade. We’re on it.”

“So, we’re going to try to find a newspaper at night?” Ron asked.

“It may be difficult,” Kim admitted. “But maybe a gas station would still have some left over, or have early delivery.”

“Or wait until it’s morning?”

“Let’s go. Depending on how large the place is. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find a gas station.”

“Coming, KP.”

Twenty minutes later, Daria re-entered her backyard. Both her house and the TARDIS were sights for sore eyes. She was tired and wanted to rest. But she knew that the TARDIS would search rather quickly. She saw that the lights were still out in the kitchen and loungeroom, so her mother wasn’t up yet. She quickly went up to the TARDIS and unlocked it with the key the Doctor had given her.

The Console Room was oddly comforting, with a soothing rhythm slowly building up as Daria closed the doors and approached the Console. “OK, search for information on the internet and the internal database,” she said, hoping that would work.

The TARDIS gave a ding and a search window came up on one of the monitors.

Daria then typed in the search window.

Middleton, Colorado

Information then came up.

“So, it does exist here,” she said to herself and wondered if the Doctor and Quinn had indeed found information on Lawndale on the other side of the portal.

Where were they anyway? ‘They should be on the way here now,’ she thought. “Locate the Doctor,” she instructed the TARDIS.

A map of Lawndale came up with a blip a third of the way from High Hills Park.

“Thanks,” she said. She wrote down the information on Middleton and the location indicated on the map in a small notebook.

After several more minutes of rest, she then left the TARDIS.

Kim, Ron and Rufus found a gas station half an hour after leaving the park. Kim saw that there were newspapers there. She grabbed one of them. “Lawndale Sun-Herald?” she asked herself. “I suppose that’s where we are. Lawndale.”

“I haven’t heard of it. But Wade can help there,” Ron said.

“Yes, but look at this date,” Kim said. She passed Ron the newspaper.

“5th May 1999!” Ron read.

“A little over four years ago,” Kim realised.

“So, it’s a time portal?” Ron asked.

“Yes. We need to go now,” Kim decided, “But first we need to buy this paper.”

“Of course,” Ron said.

Having bought the paper, they left the gas station and headed back towards the park containing the portal.

Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks review

 Eve of the Daleks

The New Years Day Special. Daleks yet again. And yet with a slightly different approach. Those gatling guns are interesting. But a story should be about more than the antagonists. It’s about the situation and how the characters deal with it. As such the Doctor’s speech about learning from one’s mistakes was a very good one. Each character has their own way of coping with the situation. It’s certainly an unexpected approach to a time loop situation. But not one I hadn’t seen before. (Last seen as part of the climax of Phineas and Ferb: Last Day of Summer.)

The concept of a storage facility as the setting is reminiscent of all the ‘Base Under Siege’ serials from Classic Who. (Although none of those were close to being a storage facility.) There was good set up with Jeff’s stuff, like the fireworks, and Sarah’s mother. But back to the characters. Sarah was realised very well, although her decision to go around the world with Nick seems very ill advised. Nick was quite creepy, what with keeping the stuff from flings in the storage unit in the hopes of giving it back. His character was well developed also.

Dan’s delaying tactic was done very well too. That was definitely a good moment. Yas and the Doctor, not sure what to make of that. Aside from Sarah and Nick going off together, the ending was quite well done. 8.5/10.

Uncluttered mind.

Hebrews 12:1

Throw off everything that hinders.

Colossians 3:8

Hebrews 10:25

Sermon

Christian hope is grounded in Jesus, via what He has done on the Cross.

Romans 15:13

The Spirit within us overflows to other people.

We are influencing them with hope.

He fills us with hope.

Scripture fills us with hope.

Whatever our circumstances are, Jesus can give us hope.

If we only see the sinfulness and brokeness of the world, there is no hope.

But if you see what God has done through Jesus - there is great hope; one that has a firm foundation.

God is a God of hope.

1 Timothy 6:17 - 19

Don't put your hope in wealth. That would be a false hope.

Be ready to give a reason for your hope.

Wealth is uncertain.

Matthew 6:20

To unleash God given hope.

We must learn not to put our hope in wealth. The foundation of our hope is Jesus and His sacrifice for us.
