Krystal thought for a moment. Things had moved quite fast, such that UNOSA still hadn't met to the consider the matter.

Thursday, 12 August 2004
When Elias arrived back at his room after lunch he turned the radio on. It was tuned to the student radio station, 2UNO at 109.6 MHz. ....UNOSA President, Krystal Lake has announced that as of tomorrow, a UNOSA supported protest rally against the Kelsington grant will be held outside the Madgewick Building. This adds to the protest notions by the Student Representative Council's of Curtin and St. Patrick's Colleges.

“Good...” Elias mused as the reporter went on about the plans by Austin and Drummond to vote that night, and Robertson, Wright and Dewey's plans to vote the next day.

...There are no plans by Mara Green College to revisit their vote,” the reporter continued. Was there some bitterness there? Elias wondered. He knew that the reporter had stayed at Mara Green for a short time the year before before moving down to Drummond. Still, at least there were going to be protests. The Vice-Chancellor and the University Council would have to listen.
Then there was a knock at the door He went to the door. “Parminder?” he asked. She had never come to his room before.

“You're here! Good!”

Something in her tone, alerted Elias that something wasn't right. “What's wrong?”

“There's a KI agent in the college,” she said.

“What are you talking about?” Elias asked incredulously.

“She's asking after you.”

“KI agent?” He knew there were rumours that Kelsington International engaged in extra-legal activities, but he doubted that they would do such on the grounds of a university that they were attempting to gain favour with.

“Yes!” Parminder said impatiently.

“So, you don't want her to find me?” Elias asked.

“Yes! It wouldn't be good. You may have started the protest movement here.”

“I doubt it. Krystal Lake said she was already considering taking action when she wrote back.”

“But that's what she believes. Come!”

Elias then heard the sound of someone coming up the stairs. He made his decision. He grabbed the keys off the hook and then allowed Parminder to pull him from the room. He pulled the door closed as she did so.

“Elias Stanton!” the KI agent called. Parminder ran, pulling Elias behind her. He easily kept up with her.

“Where are we going?” Elias asked.

Parminder remained silent. “Parminder Sangha!” the KI agent called out.

'Great!' Elias thought. 'She can recognise her from behind.' Then again, there weren't very many students of Punjabi origin, with classic-length hair, attending the University of New Oxfordshire, not to mention Mara Green College.

The two students ran through the upstairs Hall Two foyer, and then along the other upstairs corridor. Then across the connection to Hall Four. They turned as they came to the landing outside the Resident Assistant's flat. Then Parminder paused for breath. “She's still following,” she said.

“Right,” Elias said, breathing deeply. Parminder then moved again, pulling Elias down the stairs to the lower floor of Hall Four.

They didn't stop there, going further, down to the basement level of Hall Four. Parminder paused at the bottom of the stairs. The KI agent was at the top of the stairs. “Come on!”

They entered the Basement Common Room, one of the largest common rooms in the college. “Why have we come here?” Elias asked. They could go out the doors to the courtyard between Hall Four and the Deer Park, but there wouldn't really be further to run if the door on that side of Hall Six was locked. (And it would be difficult to go up the hill to Hall Seven.)

“There is more to the College than you know Elias,” Parminder said as she dragged him around the Billiards table. She flipped one of the paintings that were there, revealing a printpad.

“What?” Elias asked.

Parminder said nothing, but input a sequence into the printpad. Then silently, part of the wall slid aside revealing a secret compartment beside the BCR. Light's switched on automatically in that compartment. Parminder quickly pulled Elias inside, before hitting a second printpad on the other side of the wall. The wall slid back as silently as before. Then Parminder let go of Elias' hand. “Follow me,” she said quietly. Elias looked ahead, he could see that the compartment was a corridor ran along the western side of the BCR.

“Sure,” Elias said, knowing that Parminder would tell him more when she felt it would be safe to do so. They walked to the end of the corridor, where there was a ladder down to a lower level. Parminder went down first. He followed her.

They emerged into another compartment. Parminder then opened another door, revealing another room, the same size as the BCR above.

The KI agent entered the Marlie Yeates Room (otherwise known as the Basement Common Room). However, Elias Stanton and Parminder Sangha were nowhere to be seen. 'They cannot be in the other rooms down here. She would have heard if they had gone into the bathrooms or the other common room. She entered the Marlie Yeates Room and looked around. She went to the doors to the outside dining area. They weren't outside, heading to Hall Six.

Elias followed Parminder out of the subbasement room into a room that also reminded him of the foyer. “Where are we going?” he asked.

Don’t worry, Victoria, you are going to survive the events of the next week,” Marlene said.

Tori was relieved that she would survive the coming events of the next week. She hoped that Marlene wasn’t lying. However, she didn’t like being called by her full name. She stormed off.

Wait!” Marlene called out after her.

It was now 7:00.

Sandi, Olivia, Martin and the others entered the McDonalds for breakfast. Despite everything that was happening, it was open.

Zarabeth and Sonja had searched the secret rooms beneath the science block and were now searching the Library beneath the official school library.
What do you think the purpose of this secret library is?” Sonja asked. She had many ideas about it but wanted to hear what Zarabeth’s opinion was.

I have no idea,” Zarabeth said.

I suppose that we could try reading some of these books and perhaps find out that way,” Sonja said.

I suppose so,” Zarabeth said. Sonja grabbed a book from a science shelf. ‘It is strange that they would use the Dewey Decimal System in a secret library,’ she thought.

Marlene had tried to talk to Tori again, but Tori wasn’t having a bar of it. “There is nothing I can do. She is going to go down that path that I was afraid that she was going to go down,” Marlene said, with a sad tone to her voice.

But what does that mean? Can I do anything about it?” Nicki asked. ‘I hope that I can do something about it,’ she thought.

You could try, but I’m afraid she is going down that path,” Marlene said.

“Absolutely,” Cara said.

Kelsington Tower (Kelsington International Australia Headquarters), Endeavour, New Monmouthshire, Australia
On one of the uppermost floors of the Art Deco skyscraper that housed Kelsington International's Australian headquarters, there was a meeting in progress.

The office belonged to Fitzwilliam Kelsington, a member of the board of directors of Kelsington International Australia. He was talking to a young woman who had just entered his office without permission.

“Excuse me!” he said, as she barged in.

“Sorry, Mr. Kelsington, but there is a problem,” she said, with a serious tone.

“What sort of problem?” Kelsington asked, the irritation forgotten. She handed the director a printout of the Mara Green College News, detailing Elias' role in the failed protest motion at the previous evening' SRC meeting. He read through it. “It isn't that serious. It is a minority of New Oxfordshire's students.”

The young woman shook her head. “I have experienced this before. At New Aberdeen, sir.”

“Didn't you study there?”

“Yes sir, on a KI scholarship.”

Fitzwilliam recalled the incident. The University of Southern Aotearoa had successfully resisted KI's attempt at gaining influence. “Something similar could be happening at New Oxfordshire?” he asked.

“Yes sir.”

“We have to know what is happening there. You leave for New Oxford as soon as possible.”

“Of course, sir. I'll be there tonight.”

Curtin College, University of New Oxfordshire
“And now the business of this grant offer by Kelsington International,” Curtin College president, Oliver Sloane said.

“Mara Greene's vote already failed,” the vice-president Talianna Daniels.

“Yes, which is why we need to take a vote!” Oliver said.

Then there was an e-message beep. “There we are,” the Communications Officer Sally, Fields, said. “St. Patricks have passed the motion. They're going to protest.”

“There you go,” Oliver said to Talianna. “Together with St. Patrick's we can negate Mara Green's error and encourage Austin and Drummond tomorrow.”

Talianna was still unsure. “I'm voting no. We don't protest. It is unlikely that Austin would vote the same way as St. Patricks.”

Oliver was disappointed. He knew his vice-president had a point. Those two colleges were very competetive. “I'm voting for.” He hoped that the issue at hand would be serious enough for the Austin SRC to see sense.

The rest of the SRC then cast their votes.

Krystal Lake, President of the University of New Oxfordshire Student Association, opened her e-letterbox. There was an unexpected e-letter.

To: 'Lake, Krystal' klake@loire.uno.ac.au
From: 'Stanton, Elias' estanton@loire.uno.ac.au
Subject: KI Grant Protest.
Hallo Krystal,
You may have heard by now, of the moves by various Colleges to protest the Grant that Kelsington International has offered to the University (the move by Mara Green has failed, but those by St. Patrick's and Curtin have succeeded). I haven't heard anything from UNOSA regarding the grant. Could you reply with an answer regarding UNOSA's views on the subject, or whether UNOSA has plans for protest itself?

Elias.

It was an earthquake. Elias and Cindy were crossing over the Lawndale Bridge as it happened. “We better get back to Samara’s,” Elias said.

I agree,” Cindy said.

They arrived back there at 5:36. Louisa, Samara and Marlene then went to search in Lawndale West, near the railway line, for the Emerald.

Tori arrived at the Morgendorffer’s house. “Elias isn’t here, Tori. I don’t have any idea where he is,” Quinn said.

He may not be far away. I’ll have a look at the school,” Tori decided. “But after a quick look here.”

Sandi saw the wish that had generated the earthquake in the wishbook. She called the Morgendorffers. “Elias isn’t here, Sandi,” Daria said, with her usual tone of voice.

Do you know where he is?” Sandi asked, her usual tone also slipping into her voice.

I don’t know,” Daria said. She then hung up.

His friend, Melanie Grey, turned at the sound of her name. “Elias,” she said as reply.

“Have you read the uni newsletter?” he asked.

“Yes,” Mel answered.

“Your opinion?” he asked.

“Reserved,” Mel responded. “The uni needs the money, but Kelsington's record isn't good.”

“It isn't at all.”

Elias had got his lunch and then came back. “I have read online at various netchives, and newspaper articles. That is how I know about Kelsington's history regarding being pressuring on unis that they have given grants to.”

“I believe you, Elias. But what are you going to do about it?” Mel asked.

“There is an SRC meeting tonight. I'll bring it up then,” Elias answered.

“Of course,” Mel said.

“I have some of the netchives databased, it should be easy to print out the relevant e-pages.”

“Good,” Mel said as she took a bite from the chicken bundle.

The Mara Green College Student Representative Committee held it's meeting at 6:00 PM, during dinner.

As Dining Hall and Amenities Officer, Elias was usually the fourth or fifth fifth to report.
“...And the planning for the International Night is well underway,” he said as he concluded his report.

“Thanks, Elias,” President Anna Howe said.

“However, there is something else that needs to be reported on,” he added.

“And what is this?” Anna asked.

“You have heard of the offer by Kelsington International of a grant to the uni?” Elias asked, looking around at the other student representatives.

“Yes,” Matt Carlson, Communications Officer, said.

“Yes,” Julia McDonnell, one of the Freshman Representatives answered.

“So?” Jenna Landers, the Vice-President asked.

Elias took the printouts out from beneath his report. “These are reports from the universities that thave been affected by KI's overbearingness,” he said.

“Overbearingness?” Anna asked.
“Sorry. I wouldn't have been succinct otherwise,” Elias said as he handed Anna one of the reports.

She took it and glanced over it. “I have heard of this, and similar cases. But as an SRC there isn't much we can do to influence the Vice-Chancellor's decision.”

“I know that,” Elias said, as he handed out the rest of the printouts.

“So you want us to protest against the grant?” the treasurer, Parminder Sangha, asked.

“Yes,” Elias said.

“I agree,” Anna said.

Jenna looked at Anna, “You want it put to a vote?” she asked.

“Yes,” Anna answered. “Where Mara Green leads, the other colleges might follow,” she added. Jenna nodded.

“Let's take a vote. Do we protest the notion of the University obtaining a grant from Kelsington International?” Jenna asked.

The Student Representative Council took a vote. The result was that they would not pass a motion protesting the the idea of the University obtaining a grant from KI.

“That was disappointing,” Elias told Anna as they left the common room after the meeting had finished.

“These things happen, Elias,” Anna said.

“True,” Elias said. “But there are other ways to influence the policies of the university...”

“I'll get in contact with the other college presidents,” Anna said.

Elias nodded.
