Mysteries of Aurora - Friday, September 6 - Afternoon

After having lunch at the coffee house cafeteria, Olivia headed back to the Library. She found a nook with several reading desks next to the Main Western Entrance. She looked over her neat notes from the morning. She was thankful that she could usually read her own notes. ‘There is not much there. This will probably take years.’ That was probably why it wasn’t widely known. Aurora’s history was so vast that the occasional lost record wouldn’t be noticed. ‘But, still, I want to know more.’ She then continued going through her notes.

Freya and Alexia entered the sports center. “It doesn’t surprise me that much,” Alexia said.

“Sometimes I need a way to burn off my excess energy,” Freya said. “It was athletics at first.”

“And then team sports?”

“Yes, particularly football, especially when I get to be a midfielder.”

“Sometimes I play tennis, but that is just socially,” Alexia said.

“That’s cool.”

Freya looked at the available teams. It did include football. “Nearly every sport,” she said, as she grabbed several sign up sheets.

“All sports, including winter sports,” Alexia said as she looked at the list.

“There may be some obscure ones not listed.”

“Probably.”

They then went out to one of the fields, where one of the tracks was. “You want to join me as I run?” Freya asked.

“I’ll watch,” Alexia said.

“Sure.”

Alexia watched as Freya ran a 400 meter lap of the track. ‘She’s quite quick.’

Olivia spent the afternoon looking at various overviews of the Nordic Era. She found that most of the historians had recognised that many original records of the early 9th Century had been lost. ‘I would have been surprised if they didn’t.’ But she also found that the theories about why those records were lost varied wildly. Most agreed that the chaos of the Viking conquest in most of the northern regions was responsible, including in the Capture of Urbs Aeterna. ‘But that’s obvious.’

Freya left the athletics track satisfied with a good afternoon of jogging.

“You look relaxed despite having jogged most of the afternoon,” Alexia commented.

“Burning off excess energy, you know.”

Alexia nodded with a smile.

Freya returned to Sigrun Sigurdottir Hall as the sun set. It had been a very good day. ‘It’s good that I’m able to get that support when I need it.’

Dana saw Freya enter the Dining Hall. She wondered how her day had gone and waved. Freya waved back as she headed to the servery.

“…And so Alexia and I then went to the sports center,” Freya concluded.

“Sounds productive.”

“Absolutely. I learned a little more about things.”

“I wouldn’t have expected otherwise,” Dana said. “Apparently, there are many well known athletes with ADHD.”

“Yes, they have been inspirations.”

“That’s great!”

“And so, Alexia will also investigate the missing art at times,” Freya added.

“That’s good. I wouldn’t know where to start.”

Freya shrugged. “Maybe I’ll find a mystery that involves insects.”

“Maybe,” Dana responded with a slight giggle.

Janara saw Olivia come into the room. “You look like you had a good day,” she said. “Other than that you look exhausted.”

“Not exhausted, just tired,” Olivia responded. “After class, I swam, and then spent the afternoon researching.”

“What did you find?”

Olivia then related what she had found from the Nordic Era.

“That is something,” Janara considered. “You know it’s not my area, but I’ll help in some way.”

“Thanks.”

“Then let’s find her,” Daria suggested.

“OK,” Quinn said.

“But we have to be quick. She leaves rather quickly when school lets out,” Sandi said.

“Got it.”

They quickly walked out of the school to the front entrance.

They looked around, but they didn’t see Tori. “So, she’s blonde, right?” Daria asked.

“Yes,” Quinn answered.

“To her shoulders, usually worn loose,” Stacy added.

“That’s interesting.”

“There are many other campaigns, mostly in the Roman Era.”

“I suppose I could look into it, at some point,” Olivia said.

“Or you could watch let’s plays on VideoSpace.”

“Would there be any in Auroran?”

“Of course. Aurora’s gaming community is quite large for it’s population,” Janara answered.

“Got it. I’m heading to the Library again.”

“Already?”

“It may be early, but there is a lot to find,” Olivia said.

Janara turned to her. “Just don’t wear yourself out, OK?”

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn

SpiderGirl waited near Osborn’s room after reassuring Harry again. She had considered webbing up the corridor, but decided that wouldn’t be a good idea, given that it would take time for the cleaning staff to deal with. Soon, there was an echo as William slammed open the fire doors at the end.

“SpiderGirl!” he called out.

SpiderGirl could see that he was beginning to revert, but he was still mostly in his altered form. “William! I can’t let you hurt Osborn!”

“What? So his son won’t be an orphan?”

“That’s part of it! The other is that there are certainly others in Oscorp who are more responsible than he is.”

“But I don’t know who they are,” William said.

“I repeat what I said!” SpiderGirl stated as she saw the tell tale purple glow of the Enigma’s powers appear at the door behind William.

William continued running towards SpiderGirl.

Dafoanairi followed the Enigma into the corridor and saw SpiderGirl trying to keep William from entering a room. “Fire some warning shots over his head, but not near SpiderGirl,” she said.

“I suppose,” the Enigma said. “Low intensity,” she added as she pointed above William and then fired.

SpiderGirl saw the small projection fly over William’s head. “See, the fourth vigilante is here too, give up!”

“No!” William cried out.

SpiderGirl blocked the doorway.

“No!” William cried out again and tried to get past her. But he found that he couldn’t move.

The Enigma was trying to hold him in place telekinetically. “This is very difficult,” she said.

2025 Snowflake Challenge #11

 Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

What is that one (or several!) trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme that grips your attention whenever it pops up in fandom or fanworks? What is it about it that works for you or appeals to you? If you have any recs or examples, feel free to include them!

Check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.

And just as a reminder: this is a low pressure, fun challenge. If you aren't comfortable doing a particular challenge, then don't. We aren't keeping track of who does what.

Tropes, motifs, themes

Trope - Obsfuscating Stupidity

Especially when I write Brittany Taylor in my various Daria fanfics, as there are hints in the canon that there's more to her than it appears.

(It is Kevin Thompson who retains his 'dumb as a box of rocks' portrayal from the series)

I also have a tendency to write in a slow burn manner.

One motif I have is overcoming difficulties, whether they be caused by circumstances, because of others, such as Stacy overcoming bullying by Sandi with the help of Quinn and her friends in the installment most recently added to the archive sites, or because of neurodivergence, such as in Mysteries of Aurora. (And then there is Quinn dealing with her grief in Spider Quinn, where witnessing Jake's death continues to affect her months later.)

Nearly all Daria, but I also work with those in my Doctor Who and Star Trek fics.

I also dabble in Alternate Universe, whether they be Canon Divergence or not. (Many of the Daria AUs are Precanon Divergence.) What a Choice Leads To is an example of a Voyager Canon Divergence.

Stacy the Brain

When Stacy has to complete an essay, she finds that Sandi's behavior towards her is getting worse. Will she have to leave the Fashion Club?
