Excerpt from: Flora Feilding and the Dubbo Mystery

Friday, 13 September 2024

It was early in the morning when Flora Fielding drove into Dubbo from the northeast. She knew that something was going to happen there soon. ‘But where is he?’

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn

“But we can look at more of the properties on the map.”

“Sure,” Sandi said.

They soon climbed down the trellis and went out into the street. Sandi considered talking about Dafoanairi. ‘But if Dafoanairi is Daria, then she will then know I’m the Enigma.’ She shook her head. She had another idea. “You know, maybe someone else can help us.”

“Who?” Daria asked.

“Philippa Bynon. She is only a few houses down.”

“I don’t know who that is, and bringing more people into this probably isn’t a good idea.”

Even so, Daria followed Sandi around the back of the house a few houses to the east of hers. She didn’t know any of the other families on the block, really. ‘Maybe that’s part of the problem. No one knows their neighbors anymore,’ she thought as she and Sandi came around to the back yard. One of the back bedroom lights was on. ‘But is that Philippa, or another member of her family?’

Sandi started throwing small stones onto the window.

Daria sighed.

Philippa Bynon was reading late, when she heard something. “Stones on the window?” she murmured. She then opened the window and saw Sandi Griffin and another girl in her yard. “Sandi? What are you doing?”

“Daria and I are investigating Oscorp and I thought you could join us.”

Philippa thought on that. She still wasn’t tired, which was why she was reading so late. “Oscorp?” she smirked mischievously. “Sure.”

Daria saw Philippa emerge from the back door five minutes later. She got a closer look at her. She had short wavy brown hair. But she also saw that she was carrying toilet paper. “Toilet paper? Really?” she asked.

“We are going by their offices, right?” Philippa asked.

“We are,” Daria answered.

“Let’s do it!” Sandi added.

Daria sighed. “Of course you would do it, given you’re a rebel now.”

“Exactly, besides, I don’t think Harry would mind much,” Sandi said.

“Of course, you both hang out with Harry Osborn these days,” Philippa commented.

“Yes,” Sandi said. “Given that he has no preconceived notions about me.”

“The Fashion Club was going to end anyway,” Philippa said. “You know that, right?”

“Eventually,” Sandi admitted.

“Let’s not get into that,” Daria said.

“Where are we going first?” Philippa asked, clearing trying to change the topic.

“Downtown. There are many Oscorp offices there,” Daria answered.

“As in more than one?” Philippa asked.

“Yes, their presence in Lawndale is larger than anyone thought,” Sandi explained.

As they headed downtown, Philippa thought about what Sandi had said. ‘I think I had heard something about that. Or was it in the newspaper? Groundhog Day is not the only major shock!’

Twenty five minutes later, they walked along Third Street. “There,” Daria said.

“Where?” Philippa asked.

“Elders Solarium. That’s where the source of the brownouts was,” Daria explained.

“It does look old. Around the same age as the Historia,” Sandi said.

Philippa looked at the Solarium building. It did have Art Deco features, but that was where it’s similarity to the Historia ended. “So, you and the other three run the Historia?”

“Yes,” Daria answered. “We’re involved in various aspects of the business. Mrs. Rowe is the manager. She liaises with suppliers and with Oscorp and the Council. Although we are involved in those aspects as well.”

“I see,” Philippa said. She then saw an Oscorp office, bearing it’s logo. “There!”

Soon, that particular office’s frontage was covered in toilet paper.

“Are we done now?” Daria asked.

“Yes,” Sandi answered. “It does seem to be active in the day.”

“Although probably not yesterday,” Philippa said.

“Other places were,” Daria said.

“That’s a good point,” Phillipa said.

“Let’s get out here.”

Sandi lead them to where she and the others had battled the Green Goblin nearly a week before. ‘There’s still the fact that he knows I’m me,’ she thought. But still, Norman Osborn was still in an unconscious condition in Cedars of Lawndale.

“This street is still being repaired?” Phillipa asked.

“Yes, something happened,” Sandi said.

They cased the new Oscorp warehouse on that street for half an hour, but there wasn’t a delivery during that time. They then headed home.

SpiderGirl swung off on her nightly patrol before Daria got home.

She later came upon the toilet papered building, noting that it was an Oscorp office. “Toilet papering Oscorp? I doubt that would make any difference,” she thought.

Brownout Problem Resolved by Penelope Jericho

SpiderGirl read through the article on the Historia’s roof.  She then looked out over the town, seeing that it was stirring as the Sun rose. ‘I better get back for breakfast,’ she thought.

Sam Elders arrived at the storage facility close to Lawndale State. He then went to his storage unit. As he looked at the various props stored in it, he drew up a plan for that afternoon.

‘Now, how to get it all to the Solarium before class without Grandfather noticing.’

Lawndale was recovering, slowly, from the brownouts as the day went on.

It was two when Sam returned to the Solarium after college classes and lunch.

“You’re here early,” his grandfather said, when he entered.

“I thought I would be here early,” Sam responded.

“That’s fine, but I know you were here this morning.”

“I may have been.”

“Sure,” Flora responded.

As they entered the Dining Hall, there was a much larger crowd than Daniel expected. “This is a lot of people.”

“But it seems there is still room,” Flora said.

“There is,” Daniel commented.

They sat at a table next to the windows. As soon as Flora began to eat, she had another vision…

Spider Quinn 12 Rise of the Green Goblin - Part 1

12 Rise of the Green Goblin

Norman Osborn threw aside the latest Sun-Herald in disgust. More reports of crime that hadn’t been foiled by SpiderGirl or those two new vigilantes. ‘Of course it hasn’t!’ He then went to his laptop and logged into a specific server on his company’s network. He looked at the progress in testing of the Glider design.

Prototype complete.

That was good news. He could take it and use it. He left the office and went to the workshop.

“Mr. Osborn!” one of the techs said.

“Mr. Cross. You report that the prototype is ready?”

“It is Mr. Osborn. Testing will start this afternoon.”

“Excellent! Keep me apprised.” He grabbed a document that lay on the table next to them. It was a manual for the prototype. He looked around. There was no one there. He took the manual and left.

He then took it to his office. ‘I’ll read it later,’ he decided. He had a grand opening to attend.

Quinn and Daria arrived at the Historia early. “Today is going to be a great day,” Quinn said.

“I hope so, with how busy that week was,” Daria responded.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Quinn said, feeling the achievement at the Spelling Bee. But she knew she would be continuing to visit Sarah Robyn in the hospital. They then entered the lobby, where they found that Stacy, Joey, Robert and Angie were there before them.

“Morning, Quinn, Daria,” Stacy said as she came up to them.

Quinn saw that Stacy was quite excited. “Morning, Stacy.”

“The place has come alive,” Stacy said.

“It’s amazing what a few weeks of refurbishment can do,” Daria commented.

It wasn’t long before Norman Osborn arrived, along with his son, Harry. “Welcome, young people. Is everyone here?”

“We’re waiting on a few more people,” Quinn said.

“Of course,” Osborn said.

The door opened again and Jane and Trent entered. “This looks rather cool,” The latter said.

“Yes, it is rather like those old photos from before World War II,” Jane said. “Except in color.”

“I knew you would say something like that,” Daria said.

“This is going to be very good for Lawndale,” Jane said.

“Jane Lane, an optimist?” Daria asked.

“She can be optimistic about something,” Trent said, enigmatically.

That gave Daria something to think about.

Brittany arrived at the Historia with Kevin, Donna and Nikki. She saw that Quinn, Daria, Jane, Stacy, Osborn, Joey, Angie and Robert were already there. “Good Morning,” she said.

“Wow, like, this looks really old,” Kevin said.

“That was the point, Kevy,” Brittany said.

Soon, more people came as the time came.

“Welcome to the Historia, the former Global Theatre,” Osborn said. “It is the vision of four ordinary high school students, but it is something extraordinary for the people of Lawndale. A place where young people can meet and socialise without fear of the crime occurring elsewhere in this town. It is a coffee house, bookshop and more. A place for plays and the occasional exhibition. A place for connection. Please stay for brunch.”

“Interesting speech,” Jodie Landon told Daria.

“It certainly is, but I’m sure you’re concerned about the crime he mentioned.”

“Absolutely, including those vigilantes. SpiderGirl may have good intentions, but I’m not sure about the other two.”

“I’m not sure either,” Daria admitted.

Jane heard what Jodie and Daria were talking about. ‘I have the best intentions,’ she thought. She hadn’t been sure about SpiderGirl and less sure about Ninja Talon, but the interactions they had as they investigated the compound the cheerleaders were held in had erased most of the concerns she had. ‘They will find out that we have the best of intentions towards the people of Lawndale.’ She looked around at the other Lawndale High students and wondered whether any of them were SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon. ‘I seriously doubt Daria would be either of them’

Quinn was talking to Tori when she saw Sandi enter and approach Harry. ‘Uh oh!” she said.

“Sandi?” Tori asked. “The Historia is open to everyone, isn’t it.”

“Of course, but I didn’t think she’d be here now,” Quinn said.

Tori put a hand on Quinn’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure she won’t cause trouble.”

“I hope so,” Quinn said. But that wasn’t all that was on her mind. ‘I wonder if the Shadow is here?’ She hoped it wasn’t Sandi. ‘That would be quite awkward.’

Brittany had also noticed Sandi arrived. ‘Why is she hanging out with Harry Osborn?’ she wondered.

Like Quinn, she also wondered whether the Shadow was there. She knew it wasn’t Daria, as Quinn had told her so. ‘If she is here, I have no idea who her secret identity could be. But she was sure that the Shadow was wondering the same thing about her.’

The morning tea went well, and more Lawndale High students and their families arrived as noon approached.

Daria, Quinn, Joey and Robert joined Norman at the podium. “And now for the moment you’ve been waiting for. Daria.”

Daria went to the microphone. “I now declare the Historia open as a place for the young people of Lawndale to be able to come together despite their differences and no matter what they’re going through. Thank you.”

The crowd went into an applause and Daria stepped down, hoping that the Historia would make a difference.

Then it was time for lunch, which Elisabeth Rowe had catered for.

Daria found herself sitting across from Brittany. “That was a great speech, Daria.”

“Thanks.”

“More inspiring than Mr. Osborn.”

“You think so?” Daria asked, although she knew that Brittany would answer in the affirmative.

“I know so. I know you, Daria. But Mr. Osborn, I don’t know him. I think he’s just here for the publicity.”

“That’s a good point. I became involved in this because I knew that helping Joey and Robert save the theatre would help this town and help it overcome this time of crisis.”

“I’m sure it will,” Brittany added. “But I’m sure it will take more to turn things around.”

Daria looked into the cheerleader’s eyes and saw determination there. She wasn’t sure what to make of it.

“Sandi?” Harry asked.

“Yes?” Sandi asked.

“You’ve hardly touched your plate.”

“Sorry, I was lost in thought.”

“About your former friends?” Harry asked.

“Yes, they’re all here and enjoying themselves. Qui-inn has a crowd around her of both sexes, as usual. It’s like she’s thriving despite her grief.”

“Oh, maybe you should forgive her.”

“No!” Sandi shot back, quietly. “She ruined everything.”

“It’s eating you up.”

Sandi just looked down at her plate and ate slowly.

Jane found herself next to Joey. “So, what are your hopes for this place?” she asked.

“Much like what Daria said,” Joey answered.

“Good answer,” Jane said. “But I asked you.”

“I hope it would be for our peers as it was for our grandparents and parents’ generations,” Joey answered.

“A good answer. I seem to recall my mother talking about this place once, as a place she hung out with her friends at.”

“Seems to be a common story,” Joey added.

“That’s true.”

Quinn found herself across from Jodie. She looked in her eyes and asked. “What do you think about recent events?”

“You mean with the Oakwood cheerleaders? Or more generally?”

“Generally.”

“I’m not sure that SpiderGirl has been actually helping, The crime has been getting worse.”

“Oh?” Quinn asked, hiding her reaction.

“Mostly in the poorer neighborhoods. Did you know that most of Lawndale’s Black population lives in Lawndale Flats?”

“I didn’t know.”

“It isn’t widely advertised,” Jodie said. “A stain on the town’s reputation. But my parents made sure that I knew it.”

“Of course.”

“But, so far SpiderGirl’s mostly been seen on the west side of the Creek.”

“But that’s where most of the town lies,” Quinn responded. ‘I guess I’ll have to make more patrols in Lawndale Flats.’

“I suppose so.”

Anna Coultard found herself across from Robert. “So, what does the Historia mean to you?” she asked.

Robert gave a similar answer to Joey. “A place where we can hang out like our parents and grandparents.”

“Good answer,” Anna said.

The lunch continued, but it was soon over. Some stayed at the Historia to explore the bookshop, like Daria and Jane. But others, including Quinn and Brittany left. So did Norman Osborn.

Quinn headed home, to continue her new mask design, for a while before returning to the Hospital to keep Sarah Robyn company in the evening as SpiderGirl.

Norman Osborn headed to the Lawndale City Hall, for he had an appointment with Lawndale’s Mayor.

“Norman Osborn, at 1:30,” he said to the receptionist.

“Mayor Lawson will see you, sir,” she said.

“Thank you,” Osborn said.

Mayor William Lawson was a busy man. The stresses of governing Lawndale were growing every passing week and it was showing on him. He was sure that he was going bald faster than he had been before SpiderGirl showed up. He was already annoyed that he had to work on Saturdays, so having an appointment with Norman Osborn was unwelcome. He saw the tycoon enter his office.

“What is the purpose of this meeting?”

“An exchange,” Norman answered.

“What do you mean?”

“I would like access to the municipal CCTV network.”

“For what purpose?” the Mayor asked.

“I may be able to help with your vigilante problem.”

“SpiderGirl has brought good publicity to Lawndale. With crime increasing, people need hope. SpiderGirl provides it.”

“But what about those two new ones?” Osborn asked. “A ninja and some shadowy figure? They don’t sound like they would inspire hope to me.”

“Maybe not…” Lawson began.

“I can make it worth your while,” Osborn grinned. “Both personally and I’ll be willing to help with any civic improvements that may be needed in proximity to my various facilities, including around the Historia.”

“The Historia, you say? How did that go this morning?” the Mayor said.

“Very well, and one of the girls behind the idea gave an inspiring speech as she declared it open. But, what do you say?”

“I’ll have to give it some consideration.”

“I’ll let you think on it, but don’t take too long,” Osborn said.

“I won’t. I’ll get back to you on Monday.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” Osborn said as he left. ‘I’ll be sure to have better luck with the High School Principal.’

SpiderGirl arrived at the hospital two hours after leaving the Historia.

Sarah Robyn greeted her with a sign.

“Learning ASL I see?” SpiderGirl asked. “I’m sorry, I don’t know it.”

Sarah Robyn then wrote; I might not regain my ability to speak, but I still want to communicate.

“Maybe I could learn it with you.”

You don’t have to. I know you’re quite busy looking after Lawndale, along with whatever you do as your secret identity.

“That’s true, but I may need it for communicating with others.”

That’ll be good.

“I’m also working on an expressive mask.”

Don’t do all this on my account.

“You’re as important as any other person, Sarah Robyn. Your situation has inspired me, that’s all.”

Thanks

SpiderGirl stayed a while, keeping Sarah Robyn company.

While SpiderGirl was at the hospital, Ninja Talon was patrolling downtown in the vicinity of the Historia. She wanted to be sure that the area was peaceful. But then she heard some sirens from the edge of town to the south. ‘Another time,’ she thought as she headed in that direction.

‘That’s Officer Peterson,’ Ninja Talon thought, as she had seen SpiderGirl talk to her on more than one occasion. She approached her.

“Who’s there?” Peterson asked. “Ninja Talon?”

“That’s me,” she said. “What’s happened?”

“We caught a someone in a stolen vehicle. There’s nothing else to be concerned about.”

“Oh. Good to know it’s been handled,” Ninja Talon answered.

“Tell SpiderGirl I know she’s been visiting Sarah Robyn more.”

“I haven’t yet,” Ninja Talon admitted. “Maybe I should.”

“Probably.”

Ninja Talon soon left the scene. ‘I’ll visit the hospital later,’ she decided. She then continued to patrol for a while.

Meanwhile, Daria continued to look through the books at the Historia’s bookshop. There were many volumes she wanted to read, but she was sure that they’d still be there later.

“Daria?” Jane asked, coming over from where she had been looking at art books.

“Yes?” Daria asked.

“I’m heading out, continuing my project.”

“Oh,” Daria said. She had hoped to spend more time with Jane.

“You can come over tonight, if you want.”

“Sure.”

Jane then headed out, leaving Daria to wonder which part of Lawndale would get Jane’s attention that afternoon.

Jane exited the Historia to find Trent waiting for her. “So, what did you tell Daria?” he asked.

“The cover,” she answered.

“Of course,” Trent said. “We’ll head home first.”

“I didn’t bring the suit with me,” Jane said as she got into the car.

“Good idea.”

As the old Plymouth drove away, Sandi stepped out of the shadows next to the Historia. “What is Jane hiding?” she asked herself. She had gone off earlier, and then wanted to return to the old theatre, to look at it further. With Lawndale on edge with the recent events she wanted to get away from what she usually did. She missed the companionship that the Fashion Club had provided, even if she held resentment against Quinn.

Daria saw Sandi enter the bookstore and come over to her. “Sandi?”

“This has nothing to do with Quinn.”

“I think it might,” Daria said as she picked up a historical novel.

“Actually not. I like, heard Jane say something mysterious outside.”

“You were eavesdropping on her.”

“Be as it may, I think you would be interested in what she and her brother said,” Sandi rebutted.

“Trent too?” Daria asked rhetorically. “No! Whatever they had to say is between them.”

“I’ll tell you anyway! He said ‘What did you tell Daria’ and she said…”

Daria interrupted. “Stop!”

“She said, ‘the cover.’ She’s hiding something.” Sandi continued.

The Memorial Dance Incident - Part 1

 The Memorial Dance Incident

It was an ordinary day at Lawndale High School. Brittany Taylor was bored. Just painting what one saw wasn’t interesting. She preferred it if it was more interesting. She looked at Jane Lane’s picture. “Why are the people covered in blood?” she asked Jane.

“Because that’s my interpretation,” Jane explained.

“Wait…” Brittany said. “Didn’t Ms. Defoe say to copy what we saw?”

“No, she just said to look around and paint what you see here, in the classroom,” Jane explained.

“But there’s no blood in the classroom,” Brittany said. “I mean, there is, but no one’s bleeding.”

“Well, the people are bleeding,” Jane said.

“Blood?” Kevin Thompson asked. “Cool! Hey, Jane, paint something with blood on my canvas. And maggots!”

“The problem is… This canvas is too small,” Jane said.

“Too small?” Kevin asked.

“I see what you mean,” Brittany said. She twirled a pigtail as she contemplated this, but something then distracted her.

“Good morning, students,” Principal Angela Li aid. “Where is your instructor?”

“She went to the ladies room,” Brittany answered.

Li took that information in and took out a tape recorder. “10:25, Defoe leaves post without clearance for personal business. Initiate investigation.” She then turned to the students. “Anyway, I just dropped in to caution you that the school dance is in two weeks, and security is going to be especially tight. So, if anyone is thinking of rigging a bucket of pig's blood to the rafters, well, they can just forget it.”

“Interesting,” Brittany commented.

“It’s just a dance,” Jane commented.

“Just a dance?” Brittany asked. “It’s a school dance. An opportunity for seeing a side of others we don’t usually see in school or in sports.”

“Which I’d rather not see,” Jane said as she added a stroke to her painting.

Brittany sighed.

“The Dance is going to be cool!” Kevin said as he left the class.

“Is it?” his girlfriend Angie Zammit asked.

“Yes!”

“Remember that last dance?” Angie asked.

“Um, no?”

“When I caught you attempting to make out with Quinn?”

“Um. It was the other way around?” Kevin deflected.

“Not the way I saw it! You came on to her!”

“No I didn’t. She said that she appreciated me!”

“It was just a complement!” Angie said. “Do you appreciate me?”

Kevin looked dumbfounded (which Angie thought might be a tautology). “Um… Of course I do!” he said after a short delay.

“We’re through!” Angie said as she turned away. She then stormed down the corridor to her next class in a huff.

“Do you think they’re through?” Brittany asked Jane.

“Maybe. But then they might reconcile someway,” Jane responded. “They always do.”

“It seems more final this time,” Brittany said.

“Probably,” Jane said in a distracted tone.

“You’re thinking about the painting aren’t you?”

“You know me too well,” Jane groused.

Brittany didn’t really have anything to say to that, so she waved to Jane as she too went in the direction of her next class.

Through the day the various students talked about the upcoming dance. At lunch, Jane emerged onto the school roof. She was tired of hearing about that dance! Though she was thankful that Brittany apologised after the second time. She looked around the expanse of rooftop. Then inspiration hit. Maybe she could do up the hall for the dance for her next project! “Eureka!”

“What do you have?” came a question from the far end of the roof.

“Something to do with the dance,” Jane said after jogging over.

“I thought you didn’t want to talk about it?” Brittany asked.

“That was earlier.”

“So, you just got some inspiration?”

“Yes,” Jane answered.

“That’s great!”

“It will provide a large canvass.”

“Of course,” Brittany said with a laugh. “But what are you going to paint?”

“I’m not sure yet. But I’m sure inspiration will hit.”

Brittany smiled at that.

However, that wasn’t all that was happening. Angie was still fuming about Kevin. He had finally gone too far. “Angie?”

Angie turned and saw that it was her friend Nikki. “That Kevin!”

“What is it now?” Nikki asked.

“He isn’t going to stop cheating!”

“I’m not going to say ‘I told you so’, but…” Nikki started.

“Quite helpful you are!” Angie said with slight sarcasm.

“So, you’ve had it?”

“Yes!”

Nikki looked at Angie more closely. “I told you so!”

“Agh!”

“Now. What to do about it?”

“Make sure no one else goes to the dance with him!” Angie said.

“I doubt we’d be able to stop anyone from going with him.”

“But the others in the squad?”

“Good idea,” Nikki said. “I’ll go and round them up.”

Brittany and Jane came down off the roof. The former could tell that the latter was still in thought about what to do for her big project.

“You are going to tell me, right?” Brittany asked.

“Yes,” Jane answered.

“Cool. Then I can help.”

Excerpt from: 2002 in Armidale

It was lunchtime when Leigh Steinhardt arrived at Mary White College. She was about to start her third year at the University of New England. “This is going to be a very good year,” she said to herself as she walked into the College.

“Leigh?” Sara Dixon asked as the resident approached the bench.

Back at the Historia, they saw that Kevin was already there. “There you are, Babe! I was beginning to worry.”

“No problem, Kevie. Daria and I were looking into something.”

“What was that?” Kevin asked.

“Blackouts,” Daria answered as she went towards the office.

“Oh,” Kevin responded as Brittany looked at the menu.

“So, Zammits and Takhata’s Dojo,” Elisabeth said. “They’re both on the map.”

“I’m sorry, I haven’t been able to get more information,” Daria said as the lights in the office went off for a few seconds.”

“That you tried is enough.”

“I’ll go up on the roof again and try to guess where the problem might be.”

Five minutes later, Daria was up on roof with a flashlight and a photocopy of the map. “Flickering streetlights…” she considered as she looked around. She could see that most of the streetlights in the downtown area were flickering, but the rest of Lawndale seemed unaffected. ‘But how long would that last if the problem doesn’t go away?’ she wondered. She looked at the map again. The area of flickering street lights was only slightly larger than the reported outages. ‘That doesn’t tell me much.’ She then went back down to have dinner herself.

“Power problems in downtown Lawndale continue this evening…” Sandi switched off the radio and took out her yearbook again. After Cindy Brolsma was Melinda Brosnan, who had a brown pixie cut. ‘She still has that,’ Sandi thought as she grabbed the energy drink.

“Findu mann sem heiter: Melinda Brosnan!”

She found that Melinda was at the Historia, and looked annoyed at the brownout that was happening.

Quinn noticed yet another tingle as she brought out some fries. “Here you are!” she said to Melinda Brosnan. “At least the gas is unaffected.”

“Thanks, Quinn,” Melinda said. “it’s one thing after another isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Quinn said quietly.

“Like, everything that’s been happening the past few months. Now these power problems.”

“I’m sure the problem will be found soon.”

“I hope so.”

Daria headed home after having dinner. She placed the map of the outages on her wall. ‘It is going to be overwhelmed, isn’t it?’ she wondered as she looked at the articles on SpiderGirl from late November.

“You’re staying here?” Kevin asked Brittany after he had finished desert.

“Yes. I’m talking to Quinn and Joey about something when they finish.”

“OK.”

Later, SpiderGirl joined Ninja Talon on the roof. “So, you were with Daria earlier?” the former asked.

“Yes,” Ninja Talon answered and explained about their trips to the boutique and the dojo.

SpiderGirl took that in. “It is still not much to go on.”

“But maybe she can find something we can’t?”

“Probably,” SpiderGirl considered. She then took out a copy of the map Mrs. Rowe had made. “This doesn’t say much about where it’s coming from, other than it’s somewhere in this area.”

“Maybe look for a place that does have power, but isn’t blacking out?” Ninja Talon suggested.

“I can’t think of anything else at the moment.”

An hour later, they returned to the rooftop. “There’s too many,” Ninja Talon said.

“True. It will take hours, and we need to get home,” SpiderGirl agreed. “Maybe we can meet back here in the early hours.”

Ninja Talon agreed before climbing down the southern side of the Historia. SpiderGirl then swung off to the west.

Quinn emerged from her closet and clapped her hands, switching on her desk lamp. ‘Still needs work,’ she thought, referring to the hatch from the attic she had just used. That and the pully mechanism in the chute was still making noise. She went over to her desk and took out the map of the outages. ‘This is probably something that SpiderGirl and Ninja Talon can’t solve, but we have to try.’

Daria was writing when Quinn knocked on the door. “No, I still have no idea bout the brownouts,” she said.

“I was about to suggest that you and the fourth vigilante could investigate tonight.”

Daria thought about telling Quinn the name said fourth vigilante used (not realising she already knew it), but thought better of it. “I was out with her last night.”

“Oh,” Quinn said, disappointed

“But I’ll look into it in the morning before school. Or maybe it’ll be Sandi.”

“Or Tania Ashworth?”

“I doubt it,” Daria said. “She hasn’t said, or done anything since Friday night.”

“It was a long shot,” Quinn said before heading back to her room.

‘Maybe, either Sandi comes, or Dafoanairi goes to High Hills Park and implies she’s the fourth vigilante rather than the fifth,’ Daria considered. She shook her head. Tania already knew what the fourth vigilante and the Shadow looked like.

After midnight, Dafoanairi climbed out the hall window and down the ivy covered trellis. She then left the Morgendorffers place into the laneway behind and headed towards High Hills Park that way. She was wearing dark clothes and a cloak that effectively hid her long auburn hair which she had tied in a simple ponytail and the fact that she was squinting without her glasses.

Sandi arrived a few minutes later and saw that Daria’s light was out. “Oh. Looks like she’s asleep,” she commented. She then changed to the Enigma and headed downtown.

Dafoanairi arrived at High Hills Park and heard the Wiccans chanting as they started their nightly worship. ‘But how can I find Tania without my glasses?’ she wondered. She didn’t really think that through. It was even worse with it being around New Moon. She decided to wait until the Wiccans had finished and then call Tania.

Tania Ashworth was about to go home when she heard her name being called from nearby, within the Park. “Who’s there?” she asked. “Is it the Shadow trying to accuse me again?”

“No,” said a feminine voice said. A cloaked figure appeared. “I’m Dafoanairi, Lawndale’s snarky fifth vigilante.”

Tania raised an eyebrow. That was certainly new. “A snarky fifth?” she asked rhetorically. “Why are you here?”

“I’m investigating the brownouts that have been plaguing downtown Lawndale since the early afternoon.”

“I heard about them,” Tania said.
