Part 3: Morgendorffer at 2308 Maple

Danville. Minnesota

Trent Lane’s 1973 PlymouthSatellite pulled up in front of a yellow house with a brown roof.

“Here we are Janie, 2308 Maple Drive,” he said, turning to his sister in the passenger seat. Daria and Candace were in the back.

“Finally!” Candace said as she got out. As she did so, she glanced at her watch. 8:50. She had left an hour and a half before. 'Time to get to the Morgendorffers, talk to Daria and her mom, to get to 'Casa Lane' as Jane called it, then to wake up Trent and then get back here,' she thought.

“You want me to come in with you?” Trent asked as Jane and Daria got out of the car.

Jane considered the offer. “Yes, if nothing else, we will have a lift back into Lawndale this evening.”

“I'm sure that the Flynn-Fletchers may allow you to sleep on the couch,” Daria added.

“Cool,” Trent said. He switched off the engine.

As Candace entered the lounge room, she could see Phineas and Ferb watching The Jetsons meet the Flintstones on the TV. Perry was sleeping on the lounge next to them. “Good, they haven’t started yet,” she said.

“So they get an outlandish idea and start building contraptions based on that idea?” Jane asked.

“Exactly,” Candace said.

“I think we need to wait and see what inspires them, then we can counter plan,” Daria said.

“You have a pet Platypus?” Jane asked, when she noticed Perry.

“Yes. He is exotic and therefore cool. His name is Perry,” Candace said.

“They don’t do much, you know,” Jane said.

“I know,” Candace said.

The movie soon ended. “Mixing the Flintstones’ ‘Modern Stone Age’ and the Jetsons’ near future was a good idea,” Phineas said. He then realised that he had come up with an idea.“Ferb. I know what we are going to do today!”

“Ha! You are so busted!” Candace shouted.

“That is what you always say,” Phineas said.

“But today, I have help,” Candace said, and introduced Phineas and Ferb to Daria, Jane and Trent.

“Hey Phineas,” Trent said.

“Hi,” Phineas said.Ferb made a thumbs up signal.

“Doesn’t talk much, does he?” Daria said.

“Except when he needs to,” Phineas said. Trent noticed that the platypus had gone.

“Hey, where’s Perry?” he asked.

“He usually vanishes at this time of day,” Candace said.

Perry, in his OWCA agent mode, crept along the hallway. He came to a panel on the wall. He put his paw to the panel. His paw print was scanned and a part of the wall opened, revealing the entrance one of the tubes to his lair...

He jumped into it and soon arrived in his lair.

“Good Morning, Agent P,” Major Francis Monogram said from the main view screen in Perry’s lair. Then a picture of Sandi appeared on the screen along-side his face.“DoctorDoofenshmirtz has kidnapped this teenager.Her name is Alexandra Griffin, though apparently she prefers to be called ‘Sandi.’ All we have on her is that she is the ‘President’ of one of Lawndale High School’s extracurricularclubs. Get going and put a stop to his plan, whatever it is. We’re counting on you, Agent P!”

Perry saluted Major Monogram and turned to leave the lair.

Soon a hovercraft carrying Perry took off from the roof of the Flynn Fletcher house unnoticed by the newly arriving Isabella Garcia-Shapiro and Stacy Rowe.

Stacy Rowe thanked the Taxi driver whom had driven her into Danville as she paid her and then turned to the house. She saw a Hispanic pre-teen walking around the back.

“Hey, is this the Flynn Fletcher house?” she asked.

“Yes, you have the right place! You have come to see Phineas and Ferb?” the Hispanic pre-teen said.

“Yes, I am here to see Phineas and Ferb. I want to see if they can help in tracking down a friend of mine. She seems to have gone missing. I’m Stacy, Stacy Rowe.”

Stacy held out her hand. The young girl took it. “Isabella Garcia Shapiro, Fireside Girl,” she said.

“I wanted to join the Fireside Girls when I was younger, but my mother thought I wouldn’t be able to handle it,”

“Oh?” Isabella asked.

“Maybe she has a point. I can barely handle my extracurricular activities at the moment!” Stacy said, sighing.

“If you put your mind to it, you can do anything,” Isabella said.

“True,” Stacy admitted as they passed the Flynn-Fletchers garage door and came to the gate to the backyard.

Isabella opened the gate and said, “Hey, what’s yadoooin’?”

Phineas paused his carving of one of the many rocks that were strewn about the large yard and walked over. “Hi, Isabella, we are combining the ‘Modern Stone Age’ technology of the Flintstones with the future technology of The Jetsons,” he said.

“Cool!” Isabella said.

“Sounds cool, but would it work?” Stacy said.

“Of course it will work!” Phineas said.

“Phineas and Ferb have built a rollercoaster, a backyard beach, created S’winter, reunited Love Händel and raced chariots through downtown Danville,” Isabella said.

“In that case, I am sure that it will work,” Stacy said, remembering the news reports from earlier in the summer.

“So, you come to see our work?” Phineas asked.

“Not really. I came here for help in searching for a friend of mine who appears to be missing. A mutual friend said that her brainy sister is here,” Stacy said.

“You must mean Daria, she is inside with her friend and her friend’s brother,” Phineas said. “Although I think she has a crush on said brother,”

“I’ll go inside then,” Stacy said, she went towards the sliding door to the kitchen.

“I’ll help with the stone age tech,” Isabella said.

“Cool!” Phineas said.

It was a slightly warm winter's day when Leigh arrived at the Black and White Ruffed Lemur exhibit. The Lemurs were hiding, although there were bird sounds all around. He then saw that one Lemur was sitting out in the open. He wasn't going to do the video by himself. His brother Rick, and Rick's fiance Grace, were also coming. They were late. As he waited the Lemur disappeared again. He waited a few more minutes, catching glimpses of a lemur through the vegetation. Then heard Grace pull up nearby, next to his car.

“Sorry, Brother,” Rick said as he and Grace approached.

“Traffic was backed up again,” Grace commented.

Lawndale and Sandi Griffin's Genie - Chapter 2 - Part 3

Daria arrived at Jane’s house and knocked on the door. There was no answer. ‘Maybe she is still asleep,’ she thought. She knew that Jane wasn’t a morning person, often requiring coffee to properly function. She found that the front door was unlocked. ‘figures, Trent forgot to lock the door,’ she thought.

Jane was on level 157 of Pac-Man when Daria entered the room. “Did you and Trent play games all night?” Daria asked.

A ghost got Jane’s Pac-Man, bringing an end to the game. “Yo Amiga!” Jane said, getting up stiffly and ensuring that she didn’t disturb the sleeping form of Trent (although she knew that wouldn't wake him anyway).

“Of course,” Daria said. To say that Trent Lane fell asleep was practically a tautology.

“So what is this about a genie? And what it has to do with what happened at school yesterday?” Jane asked.

“Mom asked us about what happened at school and Quinn says that she wouldn’t believe it,” Daria said.

“And?”

“Mom then asked Quinn why wouldn’t she believe it, and Quinn said that the events were totally fantastical, which they were,” Daria began.

“I see,” Jane said.

Daria then repeated everything that Quinn had said. (albiet, with more sardonic commentary).

Jane then told Daria about Tom and herself running into Sandi and Jean at the bowling alley and her 11^th birthday present from Trent.

Sandi and Jean walked down the stairs to the kitchen, where Sam and Chris were already having their breakfast. Sandi could tell that Sam hadn’t told Chris about the emerald. She then went and grabbed her box of low-carbohydrate cereal from the pantry. Jean put some toast into the toaster. “What is your plan?” She asked.

“We will go to school and, like, try to stay out of sight,” Sandi said, wondering how it had come to that.

“Good plan,” Jean said. She could see Linda come down the stairs.

“Good morning!” Linda said.

Lawndale Offices of Vitale, Davis, Horowitz, Rhiordan, Shrechter and Shrechter 8:00

Helen looked up from her piles of paperwork to see her boss, Eric Shrechter, walk into her office.

“Helen, you wanted to see me?” he asked.

“Yes, Eric. Something has come up regarding the High School, and I need some time off this afternoon to talk to some of the other parents about the issue,” Helen said.

“What sort of issue?” Eric asked, wondering what had come up.

“That is confidential and on a need to know basis,” Helen said strongly. She didn’t want anyone else in the law firm to know about the genie.

“Can’t your husband be there?” Eric asked.

“He could, and he may be, but I need to be there myself. I would like to know more about this issue first hand,” Helen said.

Eric thought. “It depends on how busy we are today,” he said, finally.

“Oh, alright,” Helen said as Eric left the office. She immediately went back to work.

“...In conclusion we agree that Sandi having the genie is a bad thing and that we need to sleep on it,” Stacy finished summarising the notes from their discussion at Tiffany’s the previous afternoon.

“Very good, Stacy,” Quinn said, encouragingly.

“So, your sister said that we need to consider the fact that Mrs Griffin or Ms Li may get the emerald?” Stacy asked.

“Cousin,” Quinn corrected.

“Oh, Quinn, we know that Daria is your sister,” Stacy said. ‘If this isn’t the time for this, there is otherwise no time,’ she thought.

“We were just being polite about it,” Tiffany added.

“Oh,” Quinn said. ‘Of course, there is an obvious resemblance, such as there is between Mom and Aunt Rita,’ she thought. “Thanks. Anyway, Stace, you were saying?”

“So, Daria suggested that we need to consider the fact that Mrs. Griffin or Ms. Li may get the emerald?” Stacy asked.

“Yes,” Quinn said.

“Right, which situation do we consider first, Mrs. Griffin or Ms. Li?” Stacy asked as she took down the notes.

Quinn thought about it for half a minute.

“Qui-inn?” Tiffany asked, wondering if she had dozed off.

“Most likely Ms. Li, because Sandi most likely will go to school today,” Quinn said.

“Ok, so you think that Jeans mischievous nature will cause her genie nature to come to Ms Li’s attention?” Stacy asked. ‘A likely outcome!’ she thought.

“Exactly,” Quinn said, although she was sure that she wouldn’t have had put it exactly the way that Stacy had.

“But there is no way to know what sort of events would happen as a result of Jean’s mischief!” Stacy said, starting to hyperventilate again.

“I know, we may need to organise some sort of distraction,” Quinn said.

“Bu-ut what sort of dis-traction?” Tiffany asked, confused. ‘It would have to be a very good distraction,’ she thought.

“I am sure Daria would have an idea,” Quinn said.

“But what do you think?” Stacy asked. ‘I am certain that she will come up with something. She does come up with many of ideas in the Fashion Club,’ she thought.

Quinn thought and came up with an idea. ‘It seems crazy, but it might just work,’ she thought. She then told the other two.

“But are you sure that would work?” Stacy asked.

“It would have to, unless Daria and her art friend can think of something else,” Quinn said. ‘I am certain that Daria would help me improve the plan,’ she thought.

“What if it doesn’t work?” Tiffany asked.

“Then Ms. Li may find out,” Quinn said.

“But it must work!” Stacy said.

“Relax, Stacy, we may come up with something else,” Quinn said. ‘Multiple plans, and contingency plans for all of them. Definitely Daria’s territory or maybe of that tycoon guy on that cartoon about those living statues,’ she thought.

They continued their discussion.

“Quite an interesting situation, it would be worthy of a Sick Sad World episode!” Jane said when Daria had finished her commentary.

“And most viewers would say ‘what the hell are they thinking’,” Daria said.

“’A genie in a Maryland suburban High School? Magic in the burbs, next on Sick Sad World!” Jane said, imitating the usual SSW announcer.

“It may work,” Daria said, with a tiny smirk.

“Told ya,” Jane said.

“Besides, we need to be going if we are going to meet Quinn, Stacy and Tiffany with sufficient time before homeroom,” Daria said.

“Whose idea was that again?” Jane asked.

“Mine.”

“And Quinn agreed?”

“Jane, if we’re going to stop this problem before it gets out of control, we need all the help we can get!”

“True, but the fashion fiends?” Jane asked. ‘Unless they’re growing up somehow,’ she thought.

“They aren’t as dumb as they appear; at least Quinn and Stacy aren’t,” Daria said.

“I guess so,” Jane said, unconvinced. Daria noticed the ET game cartridge where Jane had thrown it aside earlier. She picked it up.

“Isn’t this the worst game of all time?”

“According to Trent, Wind bought it,”

“That sort of makes sense. Not only is he a failure at relationships, he is also a failure as a gamer,” Daria said.

“Yeah,” Jane said as she lead the way out of the room.

“Do you think it would be safe to leave Trent in your room?”

“He knows not to mess with my stuff.”

Lawndale High School 8:40

After arriving early to school Anna Pearce was looking for Jean. She was curious to know why Jean was a genie and curious as to what the emerald could do...

“Anna? What are you doing?” Her friend, Lisbeth Siobhan ‘Chipmunk’ Ogden, asked as they appeared to be aimlessly wandering the school’s corridors.

“There was a genie at school yesterday, and I am sure that it will be here today,” Anna said.

“Maybe,” Chipmunk (Chip for short) said. Whilst she had heard of the rumours the previous day and had seen the extra floor on the science block, she was sceptical.

“You were here yesterday,” Anna said, as they entered the Industrial Arts Block.

“It is rather fantastical, even with that extra floor.”

“Maybe if you went to the library with me after school, instead of going to Track training, you would have better deductive reasoning skills,” Anna said.

Chip wasn’t sure what Anna was talking about. “But I am good at it!” she said, referring to her position in the Track team.

“Oh sure,” Anna said, in a teasing tone. Chip rolled her eyes.

Jeffy Brown’s car pulled into the LHS student parking lot, close to the school. “Thanks for the ride, Jeffy,” Quinn said.

“Anything for you, Quinn,” Jeffy said, sincerely. Stacy and Tiffany got out of the back seat, Stacy remembered to lock the door, but Tiffany didn’t.

“Do you know where to meet Daria and Jane?” Stacy asked.

As if on cue; Trent’s Plymouth coupé, being driven by Jane, pulled in next to Jeffy’s car. Jane turned off the engine and got out. Daria also got out.

“Oh,” Stacy said.

“I see that taking Trent’s car was a good idea,” Jane said.

“Wasting time searching for them would not have been well spent,” Daria said.

“Hi, Daria, have you and Jane come up with anything?” Quinn asked.

The Fashionable Trio plus Jeffy and the Amiga Outcasts filled each other in on their discussions as they walked towards the school.

Daria reached the door first. “That is a good idea, Quinn,” she said. She was going to say something else (with a mixture of encouragement and sarcasm), but she was interrupted by Jane.

“Quite surprising that you would come up with it,” she said.

“Well, Jane, this situation is quite shocking. As a result, I have started to re-evaluate what is important,” Quinn said, seriously.

“Oh!” Jane said, at a loss for words at the (slight) change in Quinn.

Daria didn’t know what to think about it either. She knew, however, that the changes in Quinn were slight. ‘It is at least a few steps in the right direction,’ she thought.

“But how are you going to set it into motion, Quinn?” Jeffy asked.

“We need to find a few others and talk to them about it. The bigger the distraction, the better,” Quinn said.

“The question is; who would be suitable?” Jane said.

“Andrea, Jodie, Mack, and though I loath to admit it, Upchuck,” Daria said.

“Upchuck? Really? Eeeeww!” Quinn said.

“There are brains in our grade who would do it better than Upchuck!” Stacy offered.

“Ok, Upchuck as a last resort. That leaves the other 3, and those other ‘brains’ that Stacy mentioned,” Daria said.

The group turned a corner, heading towards the HSIE block.

“Now to find one of those people, preferably Jodie and Mack,” Jane said.

“Joey and Jamie can help as well!” Jeffy said, as he trailed behind. ‘They aren’t as dumb as you think either,’ he thought.

Whilst Anna and Chip were passing through the Industrial Arts block and the Amiga Outcasts, Fashionable Trio and Jeffy were discussing whom would help them in their planned distraction of Ms. Li from Jean’s nature, Elias exited the library on his own search for Jean. He was sure that she needed a friend. He also wanted to keep an eye on Sandi, to ensure that she wouldn’t make any wishes that would change Lawndale any further.

Earlier in the year, the British Columbian Parliament passes legislation to give financial incentives for film and television production in Vancouver.

United States

The Integration following the War of the Seaboard completes, with New Hampshire and Vermont gaining Statehood. Repairs to war damaged infrastructure is mostly complete, and economic recovery is proceeding on course with projections.

Congress disbands the House Un-American Activities Committee. President Spiro Agnew refuses to cooperate with Congress (following the previous year's Midterms) unless it is dissolved.

Apple releases it's first Personal Computer, the Apple Ia. It quickly sells out in most States.

The Civil Rights Movement receives a massive blow when Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated by a former member of the KKK. (To this day many agree that the Klan is responsible, but disavow their agent.)

The release of Jaws brings about the term 'Blockbuster'. (The next such film would be Star Wars in two years time.)

Also popular this year, at least two documentaries on Kodiak Bears... (albeit, not anywhere near as popular as Jaws.)

Mexico

Sonora joins Mexico as a state early in the year.

Central America

Civil unrest continues to plague the Central American Federation. Smuggling of weapons continues despite the government attempting to crack down...

In Panama, the percentage of native speakers of Darien Norse drops below 0.5 percent.

The high level of immigration from the Central American Federation to Panama tapers off...

South America

Guyana gains independence from Canada after a referendum.

With the facilities in Brasilia completed, Brazil's capital officially moves there from Rio de Janeiro.

Colombia leaves the Commonwealth after years of drifting away from the United Kingdom's influence.

Europe

In the United Kingdom, the Principality of Wessex, which makes up most of south western England, is abolished, with it's 'non-representative' Parliament having been abolished some years earlier. There are some protests in Winchester (and Salisbury, and other cities), but at this stage it's a fais accompli. (Some re-alignment of county boundaries occurs at the same time, to reflect the realities of urban sprawl.)

The BBC cancels the once popular The Kings of the Island, a fantasy series based on Celtic mythology.

The Channel Tunnel, between Dover and Calais, opens after decades of troubled construction attempts.

Of course, these only distract from the continuing quagmire of the Troubles. But at least there are no longer Unionist attacks occurring in Galway (or in other parts of the Connacht region)...

After many negotiations and treaty signings, the European Economic Community (EEC) becomes the European Union. Included in this transformation is the institution of a common currency, the Euro replacing the Frank, Deutschemark, Gilder, Lira, etc.

The United Kingdom opts out of these latter changes, keeping the recently decimalised Pound, amongst other things.

The Faroe Islands opt out of the European Union.

In Yugoslavia, especially in the south, unrest grows...

Africa

The war in the Congo grinds on. It will be later revealed that atrocities were committed by some French troops sometime this year. (However, there also reports of South Africa based PMCs being involved...)

The Pakistani War continues, but various American generals argue about strategies to break the stalemate...

Ratcheting up the tension, India tests it's first Hydrogen Bomb... The message is clear. India is a nuclear power and doesn't tolerate what is going on in it's neighbour to the west...

Godzilla: King of the Monsters review

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

The third movie in Legendary's 'Monsterverse'. Five years after the MUTO attack on San Francisco, a new crisis arises. While studying a newly hatched 'Titan', a Monarch scientist and her daughter are abducted by ecoterrorists. But there is certainly more to this than that. Then her estranged husband is brought into the situation by Monarch. This set-up is certainly interesting. It certainly adds additional human conflict to the story. But there is more. Monarch vs. the United States Military. See Below.

Of course, one doesn't go to a movie about kaiju just because of the human characters. The kaiju themselves and their battles are the main drawcard. There is certainly more of Godzilla than in the 2014 film. And a lot is also seen of Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah. That Godzilla helps to keep the kaiju ecosystem in check was established in the 2014 film, but this aspect of kaiju interactions is expanded upon. Ghidorah being an alien interloper, that sends the system out of balance is definitely an interesting development.

Of course these two very different elements cause problems. Mainly in the editing. Scenes keep switching from the kaiju fighting, back to what the people are doing. Often many times in a minute, or less. Focus on one thing! I would say. But this is a minor quibble. But more on those below. The story is mainly about conflict. Conflict between the human characters (especially when it comes to the Russells and their struggles), conflict between the kaiju (of course), and the conflicts between humans and kaiju.

The plot of Monarch and their struggle against the ecoterrorists (while searching for Emma and Madison) was interesting. It shows how grief (for their son, Andrew, who was killed in the San Francisco incident) can send people down dark paths, to make decisions they otherwise wouldn't make. In this case to cooperate with a terrorist group to bring about apocalyptic conditions. Most of the Monarch characters as they struggle to deal with the 'Titans' getting loose, were depicted well, especially Dr. Serizawa, but more on that below.

But the main stars are the kaiju, especially Godzilla. But also Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. (Other kaiju are seen, but aren't the focus. Godzilla going into action to protect Earth (or rather the biosphere) against threats, is an interesting scenario, and the way this was depicted was good. Mothra is slowly developed through the film, from her birth at he beginning, through to her helping Godzilla against King Ghidorah in Boston (more on that below). Rodan emerging from the volcano and going to fight against Ghidorah was a good scene (albiet with the above caveats).

The reveal of Ghidorah in Antarctica was good also. However what Monarch, the ecoterrorists or individual humans do, have an impact on the outcome. Dr. Serizawa sacrificing himself to recharge Godzilla is something I was uncertain of, but the storyline works (as it is reflected by Mothra doing the same later). The concept of the ORCA is interesting, but is mainly a (literal) plot device to get the kaiju to do what the humans want them to do. But Madison running off with it to the stadium was an important contributor to the final sequence.

Overall the film was as much of a mess as Boston was at the end of the climatic fight, but still rather enjoyable. 8.2/10.
