Church notes - 26th March 2017

The sermon notes from the 26th without those from the rest of the month

25 March 2017
1 Samuel 29 - 31
David Strengthens Himself in the Lord
Storytelling
Modern Israel - Exists because of generations of storytelling
God gave David the courage
Saul - Shallowness - He didn't have a strong relationship with God.
We all have a fatal flaw - What matters is what we do about it.
Character
- Formed in the quiet times - It eventually becomes a destiny
Are you building yourself up?
We need a spiritual purpose
David's words - Stored up in Jesus' heart
- Cried out on the Cross.
(Psalm 22:1 , Mark 15: 34)

Revelation 22:16
Psalm 51: 10

Church notes - 19 March 2017

19 March 2017
Communion
James 3: 13 - 18

Sermon
David: Shepherd, Warrior, Worshiper, King
1 Samuel 25
David and Abigail
Nabal - Fool
David was angry - he was out for revenge
Abigail
- God was working through her
- She gave words of Godly rebuke
David realised that he was letting a fool dictate his actions, rather than God.
If he had acted on his impulse for revenge - his conscience would have been ruined.
Yo-yo - Following God one day and sin the next.
David realised that he didn't consult God about his emotions
We have a choice
- Choose God's Wisdom
- Or our own

We need to listen to God's plans
- They are full of justice and love
- We need to praise Him for His Justice

Psalm 40:1 - 5

Church notes - 12th March 2017

12th March
Romans 12:3 - 8
1 Samuel 24
The Unwasted Life

Ch16
- Samuel Annoints David
Ch17
- David and Goliath
Ch18 - 31
- Looks like - Time being wasted

Tables about to change?
A New opportunity - for what David wants
vs 5 - 7
David was guilty

Do not seek revenge
- David knew that it wasn't what God wanted.
- Even the cutting of Saul's robe (and the humiliation that caused) wasn't what God wanted.
vs 10 = 12

Revenge - can destroy relationships
Love your enemies - those who are hurting you.
- It is hard!

David saw God as a judge.
- A decade of his life
Was he wasting his time?
vs 7 - 9
The Unwasted Life
We need to give our lives to God
We need to be successful at spending time with God - our relationship with Him.

Joel Esteen - 'espousing of 'prosperity doctrine''
No! It is absolute rubbish!

Even in the midst of difficulties, God is sufficient

Psalm 63:1 - 3
We need to have zeal for God.

Church notes - 5th March 2017

5 March
David Flees Saul
1 Samuel 21 - 23
David is on the run, Saul is secure
Saul was going down hill in all senses. (Politically, Emotionally, Spiritually!)

1 Samuel 28: 16 - 17
Samuel pronounces Saul's doom.

David in Gath - pretending to be mad.

22:6 - 23
Saul looses all moral ground and the trust of Israel. He can no longer hear the LORD.

David now has an advantage. He can hear the LORD and he has a priest.

David looks for a safe place, but Saul's men are spying everywhere.
Many of David's Psalms refer to a desert environment or are inspired by such a landscape.
Psalm 31:2 - 4
Psalm 18: 1- 3. 29, 33
Psalm 63

David - described in 2 Samuel as 'The sweet Psalmist of Israel'.
Chronological order of Psalms written during this period of David's life.
Psalm 59 "When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him."
Psalm 56 "When the Philistines had seized him in Gath."
Psalm 54 'When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?”'
Psalm 52 'When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”'
Psalm 57 "When he had fled from Saul into the cave."
Psalm 142 "When he was in the cave. A prayer."
Psalm 63 "When he was in the Desert of Judah."
Psalm 18 "He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul."
He is constantly turning his heart towards the LORD.

10 - 15 years - a major part of David's life.
