Church notes - 5th March 2017

5 March
David Flees Saul
1 Samuel 21 - 23
David is on the run, Saul is secure
Saul was going down hill in all senses. (Politically, Emotionally, Spiritually!)

1 Samuel 28: 16 - 17
Samuel pronounces Saul's doom.

David in Gath - pretending to be mad.

22:6 - 23
Saul looses all moral ground and the trust of Israel. He can no longer hear the LORD.

David now has an advantage. He can hear the LORD and he has a priest.

David looks for a safe place, but Saul's men are spying everywhere.
Many of David's Psalms refer to a desert environment or are inspired by such a landscape.
Psalm 31:2 - 4
Psalm 18: 1- 3. 29, 33
Psalm 63

David - described in 2 Samuel as 'The sweet Psalmist of Israel'.
Chronological order of Psalms written during this period of David's life.
Psalm 59 "When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him."
Psalm 56 "When the Philistines had seized him in Gath."
Psalm 54 'When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?”'
Psalm 52 'When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”'
Psalm 57 "When he had fled from Saul into the cave."
Psalm 142 "When he was in the cave. A prayer."
Psalm 63 "When he was in the Desert of Judah."
Psalm 18 "He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul."
He is constantly turning his heart towards the LORD.

10 - 15 years - a major part of David's life.
