Justice League review

Justice League
The fourth DC Extended Universe film. Batman and Wonder Woman have to get a team together, when Earth is threatened by the return of Steppenwolf. The opening scenes, with Wonder Woman intervening in a terrorist attack, in London and Batman confronting a Parademon in Gotham were well done. The way that Bruce Wayne recruits Barry Allen was quite inspired, and Barry is suitably awkward and relatable. The scenes in Themyscira and Atlantis effectively show the threat that Steppenwolf and his forces pose.
The nature of Aquaman is effectively shown, especially in the scene in the Nordic village, where Bruce Wayne finds him. Then there is Victor Stone, Cyborg. His questions of identity as the technology in his body continues to adapt were presented in an effective manner. The nature of the Mother Boxes was presented in an understandable way. The realisation that the team isn't enough to fight against Steppenwolf, and Batman's solution to that is done quite well. The ethical implications of such a solution are presented effectively.

This obvious twist helps to lead to a fun conclusion to an interesting story. 8.25/10.

Star Trek Discovery Chapter 1 review, analysis

Chapter One (1.03 – 1.09) Overall review
The first half of the season (after the Prologue) is mainly about the role that the Discovery crew play in the war between the Federation and the Klingons. Not much is seen of the various battles (other than Corvan II, with the Federation's Dilithium supply at risk, and the Gagarin's fate). Then there is the Spore Drive, but more on that below. There are certainly a lot of questions raised that weren't answered before the Discovery made that fateful 'last' jump, but some of them may be answered while the ship is lost in the second half of the season.
There is character development over the seven episodes, although certainly some more than others. Specifically: Burnham. She may come off as unlikeable, but she softens over the course of time, with other characters having an impact on her. A case in point, her adoptive father, Sarek. As stated in the review for Lethe the backstory added for him, is interesting, and it makes sense. (Why she wasn't mentioned by Spock remains a mystery though. Then there is her roommate Tilly, whom she is mentoring.
Other than hints at her being captain someday (by Burnham and a momentarily confused Stamets), she isn't developed that much. Captain Lorca remains a mystery. What happened on the Buran? And why is he so desperate to keep Discovery? (There is also the fact that he altered the coordinate's just before Discovery made an erroneous Spore-jump.) More to learn in the second half of the series. Admiral Cornwell made a good impression though. Even despite being captured by the Klingons and being partially paralysed she was able to assist Tyler with his PTSD.
The way Stamets was portrayed was interesting, with the effect being the Spore Drive Navigator quite distinct. Saru was developed well also, particularly on Pahvo, with him wanting to stay fearless... Tyler – Is he Voq, or not? There may be hints with L'Rell, particularly with the last scene with her in the Discovery brig, but I'm still sure he isn't. L'Rell may be playing another game. It could be that the Mudd we see, isn't the same Mudd we would see with the Enterprise crew. That he's Voq.

(Or maybe not.) We don't know much about Detmer, other than that Burnham was surprised to find that she had survived. Or about Airiam (other than her possibly being the Third in Command). Kol leading the Klingon's against the Federation (or trying to unite them that way), was done well enough. The Spore drive is a major part of this series. How it is used and ultimately why it isn't used later on is a good way to draw one in. 8.6/10.

“If what you're saying is true, what happened to my friend?”

“I have no idea,” Ezri answered. “But she might have undergone a similar experience. She may be on Deep Space Nine, or anywhere else.”

“I hope not!” Jane said. “First, we're going to search this house again. Then talk some more about what we're going to do.”

“Aren't you freaking out?” Ezri asked. Jane seemed rather calm for the situation that she was in.

“Oh, I'm rather freaked out! But Lawndale isn't really a normal town.”

Excerpt from: Other Characters Appear in Lawndale
She had to find out where she was. She decided to search the house for hints. It was a good thing she was as fluent in Federation Standard as she was in Trill.

Ezri quickly found that she was in an American house in the very early 21st Century. “Lawndale, Maryland, mid May 2001.”
This took, about fifteen minutes, before Ezri returned to the room where the other woman (or girl) was. She was slightly panicked, but knew she had to lie low. She saw that she was awake.

Jane Lane awoke. It was still dark outside. “Great!” she grumbled. It wasn't often she awoke in the middle of the night when Mystik Spiral weren't 'practising' in the basement. She saw that someone was missing. “Daria?”

“I'm not Daria,” someone who was at the bedroom door said. “I'm Ezri, and this is going to sound crazy.”

“Where's Daria?” Jane asked. She thought for a moment, and then dashed out of the room, past the other woman. She looked a little strange. What were those spots on her temples?

Jane searched the house, both floors, and the basement. No sign of Daria. She wasn't in the bathroom either. It certainly wasn't like her friend to leave without telling her. And there was also that strange woman to deal with. She was trespassing, afterall. “Ezri is it?” she asked once she had come back to her room.

“Yes,” Ezri answered. “As I was saying earlier, this is going to sound crazy.”

“You were wandering through Lawndale and came upon an unlocked house that looked uninhabited?”

“Crazier,” Ezri said with a straight face.

“Try me,” Jane said seriously.

Ezri took a few minutes, to explain.

“Let me get this straight, you're an officer in some kind of space-fleet, serving aboard a space station near a wormhole, during a war?”

“A devastating war, which the Federation may not survive, yes,” Ezri answered.

“You had gone to sleep and then woke up here?”

“Exactly.”
Something about what Ezri had described sounded familiar to Jane, but she waved it off. 'Sounds similar to Babylon 5, but with differences,' she considered.

Elias arrived in the Quad soon enough to hear the end of Krystal's speech. “...And that is why the University of New Oxfordshire shouldn't accept the Kelsington International offer. Thank you for your time.”

'A good ending,' he thought. He knew that he would load-drop the speech off UNOSA's net-archive later.

“Let's find out what those things could be.”

“Yes,” Sabir said. They then went further into the village.

Back at the TARDIS, Sigrun exited her quarters. She was concerned about Jia'hale. There was something 'off' about her, that had become apparent after Felicia's disappearance. 'She needs help,' she thought. She then went to Jia'hale's quarters and knocked on the door. There was no response. “Jia'hale? It's Sigrun?” Still no response. 'She's somewhere else,' Sigrun realised. She sighed, realising that if someone did want to hide deep in the TARDIS that they wouldn't be found.
'Still, I will try the areas she frequents first, before giving up.'

Sigrun entered the kitchen. She found it empty.

Next was the Console Room.

“Whatever your plan is, it will fail, and whatever traps you may have put in this building, I will get past them.”

“It will take some time,” the abductor said with a smile. “Time for some other events to occur.”

“Are you forgetting that I'm not alone here?” the Doctor asked.

“I'm well aware that a certain time travelling archaeologist is present,” the abductor countered, with a calm face. “I have planned accordingly.”

“Of course,” the Doctor said. “You seem to have taken everything into account. But there always unexpected variables. Still, I'm giving you the chance now, to tell me where she is.”

“No,” the abductor said. All this time, he had kept his voice calm and measured.

Yes, but very slowly,” the Doctor said.

Sure,” TJ said with a wary look at the crack. She began to move slowly towards the Doctor. She had taken a couple of steps, when the crack grew wider. “Uh-oh!”

The Doctor scanned it again. “Of course, this isn’t foolproof!”

So there is something there you can’t detect?”

Quite likely. However, I have a plan.”

You don’t sound confident.”

First step, another scan.”

What use would that be?” TJ asked with incredulosity.

Not to determine what is beyond it, but to determine something else.”

“Good,” the Doctor said. He left the tavern. “Well, come on then!”

The group left the tavern and began walking southwards along the main street. They didn't know that they were under observation. “You won't find me, Doctor... Not for a while...”

Suddenly, River ducked to the side. “What's wrong?” the Doctor asked.

“Something's not right,” River responded. She looked around, and signalled the others to come alongside her. They all moved alongside her.

“Something else? Or is it linked?” Felicia asked.

What is love?
It is used in many different ways.

1 Cor 15:4 - 7
Love means dying to yourself.
If we're not patient we can get angry.
We need to make sacrifices, die to our desires. Die to gossip, self promotion, revenge...

We shouldn't make excuses not to show love.
If we forget how to love how God wants us to love, we have a perfect picture in Christ.

“Since when are you careful?” River asked.

“Most of the time!” the Doctor objected.

River stared at him.

“Some of the time,” the Doctor corrected.

Ignoring the looks that River was giving the Doctor, Grefrew Kra asked, “So where do we start?”

“Where else? Back at the boarding house,” the Doctor decided.

Five minutes later, the group arrived at the back of the boarding house, at the door that Grefrew Kra had used earlier. “There probably isn't much more here,” Kellie said.

“You're most likely wrong. There is always more to find,” River said.
“Even if it's irrelevant,” Kellie stated.

“Nothing is irrelevant,” the Doctor said.

Grefrew Kra opened the door. “Follow me.”

“Nothing's changed,” Grefrew Kra said.

Star Trek Discovery 1.09 Into the Forest I Go review

Into the Forest I Go review
The ninth episode of the series, picking up where the previous one left off. It has a good start, with Lorca wanting to do something about the Klingons responding to the Pahvan signal, but Starfleet recalling Discovery to Starbase 46. Thus Lorca orders them to warp to the starbase instead of spore-jumping there. This is presented very well, it follows on from what has been revealed about his character so far. He persists when Stamets wonders why he wants a check up on the effect that the Spore drive may be having on him.
Turns out, there is something wrong with Stamets. His brain has been undergoing changes due to the effects of being the navigator. Then there is the slip up by Tilly, who had assumed that Stamets had told Culbur about the side effects that he has been experiencing. (It appears that Culbur wasn't surprised.) However, the plan to defeat the cloaking device by sneaking aboard the Klingon ship and installing sensors was a good plan. That there would be a large risk for the officers involved seems to be the reason why Lorca wouldn't let Burnham go in the first instance.
Is there something more there. More to the reason why Lorca wanted Burnham on Discovery than has been revealed so far. Most likely. However 133 spore-jumps in quick succession seems a little excessive (and Stamets is wondering whether he could stand the strain), but it works. Aboard the Ship of the Dead, Burnham and Tyler find Cornwell (just as well given what's next). Are the sensors too conspicuous, yes. The depiction of Tyler's PTSD, when he sees L'Rell on the other side of the room is rather well done.
Burnham then has to complete the mission, as Tyler is then in no shape to continue the mission (as Cornwell tells her). She then goes to the bridge to place the second sensor. The scene when she talks to Kol via the universal translator is interesting. (If the Klingons had been isolationist for nearly a century, there would be next to no chance for using a universal translator. Hence the specifications for the software may be somewhere on Qo'noS, but Kol and his supporters would have little use for it, even if they knew that it was there).

Still, Burnham delaying Kol while the Discovery continued the 133 jumps was a good scene. The conclusion to this episode was done well too. Discovery is recalled again. Lorca talks Stamets into doing one more jump. Tyler goes to the brig and asks L'Rell what was done to him. Her response is... cryptic (I'm still sure that he's not Voq!) The ending where the last jump goes awry is a very effective cliffhanger. 8/10.
