Tne Engineer and the Time Lady - Complications in New York

Complications in New York

“One Hour to Earth,” the ENH reported.

“One hour exactly?” Alpha asked.

“Yes,” the Pilot answered, exactly as he had 23 hours earlier.

“I’m ready to get there,” Alpha said.

“I know you are.”

Aialah was in the Mess Hall. She had had breakfast earlier, but was now reading an overview of Earth as it was in the 20th Century. It seemed that most Earths the Baffin crew had encountered were rather similar until then, with most of the divergences in history between the universes occurring during the course of that century.  She wasn’t sure why that would be the case, considering that other star systems varied widely. Earth was a constant. She sighed. She wasn’t sure she was ready to be exploring Earth in whatever state it might be.

But she was going to try, so as to contribute to the crew of Baffin, such as it was.

“Approaching the Sol System now, Alpha,” the ENH reported.

“Full scan,” Alpha reported.

“Aye,” Nina said.

“The planetary positions match to Mid-August 2004,” Aialah reported.

“And the radio transmissions?” Alpha asked.

“15th August 2004,” Aialah reported.

“Prepare to drop out of warp and hide behind the moon,” Alpha ordered.

“Aye,” the ENH said.

Once Baffin had taken up position over the Moon's far side, they launched probes to spy on the sattelite traffic.

“Strange...” Nina commented.

“What's strange?” Alpha asked.

“Some of the news reports are referring to a fusion experiment in New York City,” Nina reported. “And the technological level generally is around the average for this time period.”

“That would be something worth investigating,” Aialah said.

It only took five minutes of research to dig up relevant information. “Doctor Otto Octavius,” Nina said. “Physicist, Software Engineer and Roboticist.”

“And lecturer at Empire State University,” Aialah added.

“But information on the fusion experiment?” Alpha asked.

“It's currently 8:34 AM Eastern Daylight Time,” Nina explained. “The experiment will be after 2:00 PM.”

“That should be plenty of time to investigate,” Alpha said.

“You're taking the TARDIS?” Alpha asked Nina in the shuttle bay ten minutes later.

“Yes. I still can't fly a shuttle,” Nina answered. “I will be able to land it at the right time. Certainly before that Experiment is due to take place.”

“Good,” Alpha said.

Bridge to Shuttlebay,” Aialah called.

“Alpha here.”

Nina is added to the guest list at Octavius' demonstration,” Aialah reported. “And the probe is scanning Manhattan now.”

“Good work, Aialah,” Alpha said.

Preliminary scan is coming back,” Aialah said. “The island is mostly laid out the same as in the other universes on file.”

“What are the differences?” Nina asked.

Some elevated rail lines and a large number of abandoned warehouses along the shore with the Hudson River.”

“Not much difference in the street layout?” Alpha asked.

Not much in Manhattan... But there are more in Brooklyn and Queens.

“Thanks, Alpha out.”

“I'm going to land close to where Octavius is conducting the experiment,” Nina said.

“According to the information, that is in the East Village,” Alpha said as she handed a PADD over.

Nina glanced at the information. “I'll report in after landing.”

The TARDIS landed in a parking space in the East Village a few minutes later. “Right time, right place,” Nina murmured. She opened a channel to the Baffin. “...Reporting in.”

Acknowledged, Crewman Nina,” Aialah said.

“Starting the download of the internet before heading out.”

Understood.”

Nina set up the download as she did on Aialah's world. The download would take 12 hours.

Nina stepped out of the TARDIS and saw that it had taken the form of a van, which had the Baffin's registration number on it's licence plates. Nina shrugged before heading off in the direction of Octavius' loft.

She realised she was quite early. She spent time looking through various books, papers and microfilm at the 58th Street Library.

Meanwhile, Alpha prepared Baffin for what might happen. She reviewed the records from the Federation's history of went wrong and had Eta as well as Beta, Gamma and Delta activated, along with the Emergency Tactical Hologram. Both Aialah and the ENH were briefed as to what to expect.

Octavius' loft was crowded. Nina supposed that most of them were either investors or reporters. It wasn't long before the demonstration began. Octavius began with a bad joke involving a roll of money and a rubber band.

“Today you will witness the birth of a new fusion based energy source. Safe, renewable energy and cheap electricity for everyone. And now let me introduce my assistants.” He moved over to a pedestal and removed a sheet showing four mechanical arms connected to a harness.”These four actuators were developed and programmed for the sole purpose of creating successful fusion! They are impervious to heat and magnetism.” The harness connected itself to him. Everyone winced as various metal parts pierced his flesh.

The arms activated and began to move about. “These smart arms are controlled by my brain through a neural link. Nanowires feed directly into my cerebellum, allowing me to use these arms to control fusion reaction in an environment no human hand can enter.”

One of the reporters spoke up. “Doctor, If the artificial intelligence in these arms is as advanced as you suggest, couldn't that make you vulnerable to them?”

“How right you are,” Octavius responded. He turned around and pointed to the top of the device. “Which is why I developed this inhibitor chip to protect my higher brain functions. Which is why I maintain control of these arms, instead of them controlling me. And now onto the main event.”

On Baffin, Alpha listened to what Octavius said through the open channel from Nina's combadge. Inhibitor chip or not, the actuators seemed rather dangerous. The EMH transferred to the bridge. She could tell from a glance that she was concerned. 'Let's see what happens.”

Octavius walked up to the reactor. 'That doesn't look like a normal reactor?' Nina thought. Her concern grew as Octavius grabbed a small globe.

“Precious Tritium is the fuel that makes this project go. There is only 25 pounds of it on the entire planet. I have to thank Harry Osborne and Oscorp Industries for providing it.”

“Tritium?” Alpha asked herself. That didn't make sense. 'It would work better with Deuterium!' she thought.

The experiment started. “Ladies and gentleman, fasten your seatbelts.” Lasers then lit up and something happened. There in the middle of the room was something that looked like a minature star.

“Doctor, we have a successful fusion reaction,” an assistant reported.

The crowd applauded.

“We're producing a thousand megawatt surplus,” the assistant added.

“The power of the sun in the palm of my hand,” Octavius said.

Then everything started to go wrong...

Nina's tricorder picked up a dramatic increase in magnetism. 'That's high!' she thought.

“Uh oh!” Aialah said.

Alpha brought up the scan data on the main viewscreen. “That's certainly not good. Nina, you're reading this.”

Magnetic field density is increasing,” came Nina's whispered repy.

Nina saw the overhead lights move. She looked down at the tricorder (which she was sure was as impervious to magnetism as Octavius' mechanical arms). “Dramatically,” she added to her report as various metal objects started flying towards the minature star.

“Keep Calm! It's only a spike!” Octavius called out. “It will soon stabilise.”

'I don't think so,' Nina thought. She had to do something! One of the younger men passed her on his way out.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please clear the room!” the reporter who had spoken earlier called out.

Alpha stepped towards the helm. “Prepare to move.”

An alarm started blaring.Nina looked at a screen

Caution: Overload in progress

System Unstable

“We may need to intervene.” Nina said as metal platting came off a wall.

“We have a containment breach!” the assistant called out.

“We can be above Manhattan in ten seconds,” the Pilot said.

“Do it. Do it. Do it” Alpha ordered. They had to act now and think about the Prime Directive implications later.

The ENH engaged the emergency course he had laid in several minutes earlier.

The impulse engines flared and Baffin shot out from behind the Moon.

“Shut it off Otto!” Harry Osborn called out.

“It will stabilise. It's under control!”

“I'm in charge here!” Harry screamed. “It's my money!”

The situation on the Bridge was tense as Baffin approached the planet. “260 miles above Manhattan,” the ENH said quickly.

Aialah ran a quick intense scan of the loft where the potentially disasterous experiment was taking place. “It's getting worse!” she said straight after the ENH.

In Transporter Room 1, Beta locked onto some water in the Hudson, ready to beam it into the loft if he needed to.

Nina watched as the man in the spider-themed costume pushed Harry Osborn away from the oncoming equipment cart. 'It must be that Spider-Man,' she thought. He then leapt towards the switchboards. 'Of course!' she realized.

“What are you doing?” Ocatvius asked.

“Pulling the plug!” Spider-Man answered.

“No!” Octavius shouted as he swatted Spider-Man aside with one of the artificial arms.

'I have to risk it!' Nina thought. She leapt forwards as another increase in the magnetic field occurred and windows shattered.

It was definitely getting out of control. She glanced at the life signs scan of the loft. Nina was moving towards the switchboard, and Spider-Man seemed to be knocked out. Octavius was still right next to the overloading reactor. Most of the people had left, with who she suspected to be Octavius' wife and one of the investors still there. 'Not much choice,' she thought quickly. “Beta, energise!” she ordered.

Beta tried to beam water into the loft.

Alpha saw the life sign she was sure was Octavius' wife weaken. Something had happened. Then Beta's report came in. “The magnetic field is interefering. Water won't materialise.”

Spider-Man recovered from the hit. Rosie was dead. He was sure of it. He looked and saw that one of the other people was trying to unplug the reactor. 'Good!' But he could do it better. He was stronger.

The reaction stopped. But Octavius was down to the count. Nina looked him over as Spider-Man made himself scarce. 'I'll have to look him up again,' she thought. She quickly noticed that the inhibitor chip had burned out. “Oh no!” she said. She wasn't sure what would happen next, but she hoped that he'd get the help he needed. “Nina to Baffin, I'm returning to the TARDIS.”

Acknowledged,” Aialah said.

Peter Parker watched as the paramedics loaded Octavius onto the ambulance. He thought back over what had just happened. (Other than Harry not forgiving his wall crawling alter ego. He had already thought on that a lot.) Did Octavius fall victim to hubris, therefore throwing caution to the wind? Probably. But then there was that lady who tried to help him pull the plug. 'Why would she risk herself?' Probably because she thought he was done for the count.

ANZAC Day

 They shall grow not old,

as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them,

nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun

and in the morning

We will remember them.

Lest we forget

Springtime of Empires - 1600

1632

North America

The Spanish re-capture more Dano-Norwegian settlements. They also counter attack against the French.

More settlers arrive in New Spain. It is hoped that the greater presence would allow them to resist any attempt at capture by their enemies.

The same occurs in New France. (Thousands more arrive.)

The Spanish push back against the French advance from New Orleans.

Caribbean

The Spanish fully recapture the Dominican Colony. Their forces continue into Haiti…

South America

The French expand their control of the northern areas of Brazil, despite attempts by the Iberians to resist.

Elsewhere in the Spanish ruled areas, there is discontent.

The Dano-Norwegian beachhead at Cumana remains stalemated.

But that is not so in La Platta.

Europe

United Republics of Albion officially established.

The Parliamentarians have the remaining Royalist forces on the ropes. But the same is not true of the various rebels in the Highlands, Western Wales and Cornwall. There are many redoubts in those regions (especially the many castles in Western Wales).

The French recapture some of the land captured by the Spanish the previous year.

The Triple Commonwealth begins covertly assisting the Cossacks…

Africa

The Spanish and Ottomans take advantage of the continued Moroccan collapse, signing another treaty to divide the region between them.

Asia

Incidents of unrest in Azeri lands increase.

The Persians push into Ottoman held lands. (Given the distractions in eastern Europe and near the Gibraltar Straight.)

Central Asian conflicts are stalemated.

As are the Chinese ones.

Oceania

A Dano-Norwegian fleet manages to land a force at a Spanish settlement in south-eastern Australia. The element of surprise allows them to seize the settlement and allow them to use it as a beachhead. Some Aboriginal tribes nearby hear of the incursion and use the distraction as a chance to rebel against the occupiers.

Dano-Norwegians establish a small settlement in southern Tasmania.

Their settlement on the South Island also expands.

Mysteries of Lawndale - Night of the Coffee House - Part 9

 Part 9

“Did you have to tell the police officer I had suspicions?” Dewey asked as they walked away from the café.

“I didn’t have to,” Daria responded. “But I want to cultivate a working relationship with her. It is off to a good start so far.”

“I suppose. But I won’t say anything until we’re at your place.”

“I wasn’t going to ask until we were there.” They continued walking in silence.

Stacy came out of the school building to where Quinn and the boys were waiting. “Sorry I’m late, Sandi wanted to go through the latest Waif,” she said nervously.

“She hasn’t been giving you a bad time about being in the Mystery Club, has she?” Quinn asked.

“Not really,” Stacy murmured.

“Stacy…” Quinn prompted with concern.

“Yes!” Stacy said. “Not in so many words of course. But in her expressions when I mention it!”

“I’m going to have to talk to her,” Quinn groused.

Stacy was alarmed. “No! That will make it worse!” she said while waving her arms.

“Something needs to be done,” Quinn said. “It’s not right that she’s giving you a hard time.”

Stacy nodded. “Maybe call her out at the next Fashion Club meeting.”

“Maybe,” Quinn considered. She looked at the three bored looking boys. “But we better get going.”

“Please!” Jeffy said.

“Oh, sorry!” Stacy said.

Jane looked at the clock. 3:30. Detention was only half over… She closed her eyes with fatigue. She then started! Ms. Morris had slammed a ruler on her desk.

“Attention, Lane!” she said. “You will not sleep in detention!”

Jane grumbled.

Daria and Dewey arrived at the Morgendorffers. “Would you like a snack before we talk?” Daria asked once they were in the kitchen.

“Sure,” Dewey said nervously.

Daria opened a couple of cupboards. “Fruit and biscuits are here, and the chocolate is here.”

“Thanks,” Dewey said as he took a few biscuits.”

Daria poured a couple of sodas, and then placed the picture on the table. “So, who is it?” she asked.

Dewey then told Daria his suspicions.

Quinn and her friends soon arrived. Dewey was still there, watching Sick Sad World on the living room TV. “Dewey?” Quinn asked.

“I was telling Daria something,” Dewey responded.

“Oh?”

“You’ll find out tomorrow night.”

“Daria usually tells me if she finds something,” Quinn said as she and her friends headed to the kitchen.

“Hi, Quinn, Stacy,” Daria said.

“We’ve helped too!” Joey said.

“You have?” Daria asked as she poured more drinks.

“Yes. We’ve helped Quinn ask people about the sketches,” Jeffy said.

“Very good, Jeffy,” Daria said.

“Where’s Jane?” Stacy asked.

“Detention,” Daria answered.

“Detention? Why?” Quinn asked.

“Ms. Morris thinks the Mystery Club is a waste of time and no excuse for Jane being late to Homeroom,” Daria answered. “She is someone for me to keep an eye on.”

Quinn nodded.

“She’s hard on people who she thinks are slackers,” Stacy added.

“So, what did Dewey say?” Quinn asked.

“You’ll find out tomorrow night,” Daria answered. “Suffice it to say, that he gave me the name of someone currently attending Lawndale High.”

“I understand,” Quinn said. There had been many times in Highland that Daria had to keep information close to her chest, as it were.

“Oh no!” Stacy said in slight panic.

“Relax, Stacy, Daria knows what she’s doing,” Quinn said reassuringly.

“I hope so.”

“But we should discuss what we are doing tomorrow night,” Daria said.

“Sure, but shouldn’t we wait for Jane to get here?” Stacy asked.

“Of course,” Daria said. “But first we’ll talk about what we have done today.”

“Sure,” Dewey said.

Detention finally ended. “You will be on time tomorrow, Lane!” Ms. Morris stated, her imitation of a drill instructor impeccable.

“We’ll see!” Jane said.

“Exactly like Summer and Penny!” Ms. Morris murmured as Jane left the room.

‘I’m not like my sisters,’ Jane thought yet again as she arrived at the Morgendorffers at close to five.

“Jane?” Quinn asked when she opened the dor.

“I’m fine. I just don’t like Ms. Morris.”

“Daria told us what happened,” Quinn said as she let her in.

‘Of course,’ Jane thought.

Batman (1989) review

 68.      Batman (1989)

Rewatch(?). Crime increasing in Gotham City, a mysterious vigilante dressed as a bat is seen. However, a new threat arises. A criminal falls into a vat of acid and emerges insane, and calling himself the Joker. The conundrum Batman faces in the form of the threat that the Joker poses to the populous of Gotham is well contrived. Of course, that isn’t all there is to the story. The interactions between Bruce Wayne and the reporter were rather well done.  A rather good film. 8.4/10.

Changes in Time and Space - Chapter 5 - The Eleventh Doctor - Part 2

8 May 1863

Bisonville, New Mexico, Contested between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America (currently in Union hands)

The TARDIS materialised outside the town.

“The Old West,” the Doctor said.

“That’s good. Haven’t been there for a while,” Felicia said.

“I have been there recently, but in Nevada in seven years time.”

“What happened?”

“You don’t want to know!” the Doctor snapped.

‘Must have been bad,’ Felicia thought. “Let’s go.”

The Doctor exited the TARDIS, followed by Felicia. He took out the sonic screwdriver and pointed it in the direction of the town. “No indications of anachronistic technology,” he said.

“That’s good,” Felicia said.

“There was anachronistic technology in Nevada,” the Doctor added. ‘Of course, there was more to that situation than the technology,’ he mused darkly. He hoped that the situation wouldn’t be similar.

“There was? Of what sort?”

“Electrics, that’s all you need to know.”

“You sure?”

“Of course I am.”

“Let’s go then,” Felicia encouraged.

“Of course.”

Bisonville was a typical Western town, with all the services usually in such a place. The Doctor and Felicia entered the Saloon. “Best place for news,” he said.

“I guess so,” Felicia said.

The Doctor walked up to the bar. “Hello, I’m the Doctor. Are there reports of unusual events lately?”

“Depends, what do you mean by ‘unusual’?” the bartender said.

“Something fantastical,” the Doctor said.

“Nothing unusual,” the bartender said.

The Doctor looked at the other patrons. One of them twitched and made a move for it. “No, I’m not a lawman, I’m just curious as to what has been going on,” he said.

The person continued to bolt, but found Felicia blocking the entrance. “He’s telling the truth,” Felicia said.

The person moved towards a window.

“I wouldn’t do that,” the Doctor said.

“He would,” the bartender said.

“Why?” the Doctor asked.

“Seems like the type,” the bartender replied.

The person reached the window and jumped through it. Felicia jumped through it after him.

“Great!” the Doctor said.

“I wouldn’t worry, Sweetie,” one of the patrons said.

The Doctor turned. That voice was very familiar. “River?”

“The one and only, Sweetie,” Doctor River Song said.

“Of course you are here. Where there’s one out of order companion, there is another.”

“Is that any way to refer to your wife? Wait; you said out of order?” River said, she took out her diary. “You’ll refer to this as ‘Felicia’s visit’.”

“So you know her name?”

“I know her name. But I haven’t met her yet.”

“Right,” the Doctor pondered.

“I’m not the only one here,” River said.

“What?”

“Hi, Doctor,” another patron said.

“Grefeaw Kra, of course.”

“Hi!”

“And Kellie too, great! But now we need to follow Felicia,” the Doctor said.

“Yes, Sweetie.”

“We also need to compare,” the Doctor said.

“Angels in Manhattan?” River asked sadly.

“Yes.”

“Victorian Clara Oswin Oswald?”

“Yes.”

“21st Century Clara Oswin Oswald?”

“No!”

“Relax. I didn’t specify when in the century you’ll find her.”

“That’s true,” the Doctor said. He then asked River questions about events that she had experienced.

Felicia followed the person as he ran down the alley away from the saloon. She was gaining. “Give up, I will catch up. Tell me what you know.”

“No, way. I have heard of the Doctor, death follows in his tracks,” the other person said.

“That’s not what happens. Death doesn’t follow in his tracks. He stops the situations getting worse.”

“That’s what he wants you to believe.”

“Don’t worry, Felicia. I’m here,” the Doctor said. Having answered each other’s questions, he and River had followed Felicia.

“Get away, you Oncoming Storm,” the suspicious fellow said as he drew a gun from his gun belt.

“What did you call me? That’s what the Daleks used to call me.”

“They’re not the only ones.”

The Doctor sighed.

After the Doctor left, Kellie looked around the Saloon. Most of the patrons were keeping to themselves. She turned to the bartender. “What do you know of the person who ran away?” she asked.

“Nothing, really,” the bartender said as he cleaned a glass. “He only came into town a couple of months ago. He always kept to himself.”

“Did he hang around anyone?” Kellie asked.

“Only one or two, but they have left within the last week,” the bartender said.

“OK,” Kellie said, wondering what to ask next.

“There’s someone still in town though.”

“Who?” Grefeaw Kra asked.

“He keeps to himself. The only name I’ve ever heard was Alemat.”

“That sounds strange,” Grefeaw Kra remarked.

“Do you know where this Alemat is staying?” Kellie asked.

“In a boarding house on the edge of town,” the bartender replied.

“Thanks,” Grefeaw Kra said. She turned to Kellie. “We should check that out.”

“We should wait for River and the Doctor,” Kellie stated.

“We don’t need to,” Grefeaw Kra said.

Kellie sighed. “I’ll stay here,” she said.

After getting the directions from the bartender, Grefeaw Kra left the saloon and quickly entered a nearby alley...

“They’re not the only ones,” the suspicious fellow said.

The Doctor sighed.

“What are you up to?” Felicia asked.

“Not answering you. Not if you travel with him.”

“This is getting nowhere!” Felicia said.

“Then, I’ll take you to the Sherriff,” the Doctor decided.

“I still won’t say anything!”

Ten minutes later, there was a commotion in the Sherriff’s office.

“Has this man done anything wrong?” the Sherriff asked.

“Nothing,” Felicia admitted.

“I thought you could ask him what he’s doing in this town,” the Doctor said.

“Has he done anything wrong?” the Sherriff asked again.

“Nothing we know of,” River said.

“You’re free to go,” the Sherriff said to the person.

“Good bye!” the man said as he left the Sherriff’s office.

The Doctor turned to the Sherriff. “Any strange occurrences happening here.”

“Depends on what you mean by ‘strange’. We have had Southern spies, but not recently.”

“No, things that seem fantastical,” the Doctor clarified.

“I’ve heard rumors, but nothing substantive,” the Sherriff said.

“Thanks for your time,” Felicia said.

“However, do not drag in residents of this town without a reason again!” the Sherriff said.

“I will find a reason,” the Doctor said.

“It would have to be good,” the Sherrif rejoined, as the Doctor turned.

“Come, let’s investigate this town,” the Doctor said to River and Felicia.

Grefew Kra arrived at the boarding house on the edge of town, and entered the building. They then started searching the building in a methodical manner...

After twenty minutes, they found a room which contained things that were out of place. ‘If only the Doctor was here,’ they thought. ‘He would make sense of it.’ they took out their mini-tablet and took some images...

The Doctor, Felicia and River returned to the Saloon. “Kellie is still here, but Grefrew Kra isn’t,” the Doctor noted.

“Grefrew Kra is quite resourceful,” River said.

“I know. Sometimes too resourceful,” the Doctor added.

“Doctor?” Felicia asked.

“Get’s into trouble.”

“Like a lot of others, I imagine,” Felicia said.

The Doctor paused, and looked at Felicia. “She has you there,” River said.

The Doctor pointed to the bar, where Kellie was waiting. “Right, let’s fill Kellie in.”

“So this is Felicia?” Kellie asked as Felicia sat down.

“That’s me,” Felicia answered.

“How did you get here again?” Kellie asked.

“Anomalies in the TARDIS,” the Doctor answered.

“She normally travels with a later Doctor,” River added.

“Right,” Kellie said.

“And now, I can’t find her, or her other companions,” Felicia said.

“Doesn’t it seem strange that the Doctor usually finds his companions in Britain?” Kellie asked.

“I guess that has been where he’s been the most needed,” Felicia said.

“The stories seem to gravitate around there, I agree, but there are also other stories from other parts of Europe, here in America and in various parts of Asia.”

“I’m sure there are stories from elsewhere too.”

“There are but they don’t become obvious until after this point in time.”

“Right.”

“Enough of that digression, why do you think most companions are ‘Brits’.”

“I have no idea, sure I’m from East Anglia,” Felicia said, she lowered her voice so that the Doctor wouldn’t hear what she said next. “...And one of the next Doctor’s companions is, or will be, from Devon, as an example, but he also has non-British companions. One of my fellow companions is from Iceland, and one of the next Doc’s is from a planet called Tyria.”

“Very few aren’t from Britain, most are.”

“I have to think about it,” Felicia said.

Felicia was still pondering Kellie’s hypothesis when Grefew Kra re-entered the Saloon. ‘I guess something’s been found,’ she thought, unsure of what pronoun to use for Grefew Kra...

“Doctor,” Grefew Kra said.

“What have you found?” he asked.

Grefew Kra gave their mini-tablet to the Doctor, after ensuring that the screen was showing the images taken earlier in the boarding house. “Interesting. These definitely show that there are anachronistic objects in that boarding house.”

“Anachronistic objects? What kind?” Felicia asked.

“Electronics,” Grefew Kra answered.

“Anything else?” Felicia asked.

“Teddy bears,” Grefew Kra answered.

“Teddy bears?” Felicia pondered. That seemed innocuous, but she knew that they wouldn’t be until after the first Roosevelt’s Presidency of the United States.

“Not that strange,” Grefew Kra said.

“Not at all.”

“There are some things that aren’t so innocuous,” the Doctor said.

“There are?” Felicia asked.

“Yes. I found several copies of Mao’s Little Red Book. If that got out, it could seriously alter the timeline,” the Doctor said.

The others all agreed with that assessment. “We need to investigate further,” Kellie said.

“Of course,” the Doctor said. “But very carefully.”

“Since when are you careful?” River asked.

“Most of the time!” the Doctor objected.

River stared at him.

“Some of the time,” the Doctor corrected.

Ignoring the looks that River was giving the Doctor, Grefrew Kra asked, “So where do we start?”

“Where else? Back at the boarding house,” the Doctor decided.

Five minutes later, the group arrived at the back of the boarding house, at the door that Grefrew Kra had used earlier. “There probably isn't much more here,” Kellie said.

“You're most likely wrong. There is always more to find,” River said.

“Even if it's irrelevant,” Kellie stated.

“Nothing is irrelevant,” the Doctor said.

Grefrew Kra opened the door. “Follow me.”

“Nothing's changed,” Grefrew Kra said.

“That's not surprising,” the Doctor said. “But you can still lead the way.”

“Of course,” Grefrew Kra said and then opened another door.

They entered a corridor. The Doctor took out the sonic screwdriver and ran a scan. “Hidden cameras,” he commented.

“As expected,” River said.

“We'll proceed as planned,” the Doctor said.

“Quite carefully.”

“Of course.”

Slowly, they continued deeper into the building.

A minute later, they found something else... “Stop!” the Doctor said.

“What's wrong?” Kellie asked.

“More anachronisms,” the Doctor said.

Kellie looked around. The motifs had influences from artistic styles throughout the 20th century. The doors in particular had an Art Deco design. “Very much so,” she commented.

“We're almost there,” the Doctor said.

Kellie indicated a door. “After you.”

“Sure,” the Doctor said as he opened the door.

The room was empty. 'Of course,' the Doctor thought. It wasn't that easy.

“The next one?” Kellie asked.

“Of course. Then most of the rooms could be empty. Make it tedious so that we would give up looking!” the Doctor groused.

“Hopefully it wouldn't be too tedious,” Kellie added sarcastically.

“No.”

“No?”

“Some tedium is to be expected,” the Doctor said.

“Of course.”

“I find it difficult at the best of times...”

They continued looking.

River entered another empty room. Maybe it was time go to back to the Saloon. But first, she looked around the room. Nothing. Or nothing of interest. There was something there. Just furniture. She looked around the room again. She found a piece of paper in one of the drawers. It was blank. 'There might be invisible writing on it,' she thought, so she pocketed it.

The Doctor and Kellie came to a branch in the corridor. “Which way?” the Doctor asked.

“Left,” Kellie decided.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

They turned left and found an area without lights. But the Doctor switched the sonic to it's torch function.
