It took until the beginning of the Summer
between Junior and Senior years for Jefferson Brown to realise that Quinn
Morgendorffer was never going to be
in a long term relationship with him.
Late one June afternoon, while Lawndale
was in the middle of a heat wave, he decided to tell his best friends (and
until then, rivals for Quinn’s affection), Jamie White and Joseph Green...
Friday,
June 23
It was hot in Lawndale. It had been
forecast for over 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Jeffy Brown had parked in Dega Street
near a coffee shop that was frequented by the less popular teens at his school.
He had decided to ask his friends to meet him there so that they wouldn’t be
distracted. He knew that Quinn never went there. Her sister and her artistic
friend, did sometimes, but she didn’t.
“Why are we here, Jeffy?” Jamie asked,
once they had their cappuccino’s and were sitting.
“Yeah. In this creepy place?” Joey asked.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” Joey asked.
“It has taken me a while to realize this,
but I don’t want to go out with Quinn anymore.”
Joey and Jamie were shocked. “What?” Joey
finally asked.
“You heard me!” Jeffy said.
“You don’t like her?” Jamie asked.
“She’s boring. I always paid for the
meals. She’s pretty, but we don’t share many interests.”
“You mean you’re dropping out?” Joey
asked.
“If you mean that you and Jamie don’t have
to worry competition from me, yes. Go ahead! I didn’t say that you had to stop
dating her.”
“Um, OK,” Jamie said.
“So who are you going out with then?” Joey
asked.
Jeffy thought for a moment. “I have no
idea.”
