The Engineer and the Time Lady - Rescue v0.3

 9. Rescue

Alpha and the Synth were in Transporter Room 1, along with a replicated coracle, which the Synth would use to board the distressed ship. “Ready for transport?” Alpha asked.

“Yes,” the Synth answered. “I have run through all your scenarios.”

“Very good,” Alpha said as she moved behind the console.

“Energize.”

The Synth materialisd, in the coracle a short distance from the ship. Alpha continued to watch his progress via the probe.

Nina entered the library on her third day of work. Immediately she was called into the head Librarian's office. She could see the expression on her new boss' face. “Is something wrong?”

“Aialah Talan hasn't come in today.”

That was something Nina hadn't expected. “She didn't.”

“I know something of what occurred yesterday,” the Head Librarian divulged. “Including about the book that shouldn't have been loaned.” She shook her head.

“What I suspect is personal, but I have reason to believe she could be in danger.”

“I knew about her and the Mayor's son. So I suspected that something like this could happen,” the Head Librarian got up from behind the desk and paced. “But Aialah is missing and I should have looked out for her more.” She gestured to the pile of paperwork at one end of the desk and sighed.

Nina could see that the Head Librarian took duty of care seriously. It was just as well she had read up on the way this particular society worked. “So, you have informed the Police and the Guild then? Why are you telling me this?”

“The Guild, yes,” the Head Librarian answered. “The Police, not yet. The latter may be more influenced by the Mayor than I like.”

'Of course. It will the Guild leading this investigation,' Nina thought. She just wanted a quiet few days! “So...”

“Given that Aialah confided in you, a little, the Guild wants you to help with the investigation.”

Nina nodded.

The Emergency Away Mission Synthetic analysed the refusal that the crew member had given him. “Why?”

“You have your answer. The Captain won't see you, and we can repair the ship ourselves!”

“I still can repair your ship.”

The crewmember then brandished a sword. “Get off this ship!”

Alpha saw saw the Synth retreat. She supposed she could beam him into the hold, but that was still rather risky from a Prime Directive standpoint. 'There's probably not much choice if the ship is to be saved,' she thought. She wished she had tried to run simulations of external repairs to the hull. She shook her head. There was no way the Synth could have done that.

“Emergency Away Mission Synthetic to Baffin.”

“Alpha here.”

“I was unable to gain entry to the hold.”

“Could you try again?” she asked. A look at the sensor data told her there were crew in the hold. She wasn't sure they would leave it.

“There's a high probability of failure, but I'll try.”

“Is that strange man asking to help repair the ship again?” the Captain asked.

“He is. I should note that the cracks in the hull are getting bigger. We won't be able to save the cargo.”

“Forget the cargo, can all of us escape?”

“Yes, barely. The jollyboats are ready to go.”

“Good. Now, tell that man to go.”

The Synth saw the Mate approaching. “His answer?”

“Clear off. We have the repairs well in hand.”

“I can repair your ship.”

“No!” the mate said, brandishing a sword again.

“Withdraw,” Alpha said.

Nina had worked for a few hours before she was called into the Head Librarian's office again. The local Guild Representative was there. “So, Nina Lumber?”

“That's me.”

“So, Aialah Alera-Kalrea confided in you about why she thought she would get into trouble?”

“Yes.”

The interview went on for a while, during which Nina filled in the Representative on what had happened two days earlier.

“Thanks for the help,” the Representative said.

“I would like her to be found too.”

“Stay at the library after work and I'll fill you in on what has been figured out so far.”

“Sure.”

During her lunch break, Nina went back to the TARDIS. She wondering if she would be able to find Aialah using the Scanner. 'OK, TARDIS, scan the data downloaded so far. Search for Aialah Alera-Kalrea.”

The TARDIS beeped. A picture of Aialah came up. The word Missing was prominent in the poster. 'That didn't help.' But she had barely begun. “Right, the last time she was seen in surveilance footage.”

There was another beep and a video of Aialah and the Mayor's son appeared. The time stamp indicated it was taken the previous night. It was at the city's main train station and they were waiting at the platform.

“Were there trains scheduled last night?”

A list of services to that station came up on the screen. None of them matched the timestamp, which was firmly an hour after the last one. Something had happened to her after that? Locating the Mayor's son would be the next step.

“Search for Karlan Lanronal.”

Mayor Lanronal honors son for services rendered.

Beginnings of 2020 - Star Trek: Stepping Into Something New

Star Trek: Stepping into Something New

12 August 2420

Starbase 604 filled the screen as the shuttle approached.  Ensign Andrew Kelvin looked for the ship he was posted to. “There it is,” the pilot, T’Laris, said.

Kelvin saw it, a mid-sized ship. “USS Manitoba. Wow!”

“It is impressive. USS Manitoba NCC 121545. Tasmania class, 450 meters long, 12 decks. Capable of reaching the Large Magellanic Cloud within a year at its highest sustainable Slipstream speeds.”

That was unlikely Kelvin thought.  “But we’re going to explore a lot closer, right?”

“That’s right. We’re chasing up on reports of distant human settlements,” T’Laris answered.

Aboard the Manitoba, Lieutenant T’Laris entered the Bridge. It was her first exploratory mission.

Quinn's Code - Geekery at the Mega Mall - Part 2

After school Quinn walked up to one of her fellow Computer Club members. “Um, Xavier? I'm wondering if you could drive me to the Mall of the Millennium on Friday?”

Xavier Daldon thought for a moment. “Isn't that in southern Delaware?” he asked.

“So?” Quinn asked. 'What's wrong with Delaware? At least it's not Texas...'

“I will have to think about it,” he said.

“You don't have to answer right away,” Quinn said.

“I will give you my answer by Thursday night.”

“Cool,” Quinn said.

Jennifer drove Daria and Jane towards Jane's house.

“There's no way we can get out of this field trip, is there?” Jennifer asked.

“No,” Jane said.

Daria sighed. “I'm sure it won't work, but I will ask Mrs. Bennett tomorrow to call off the field trip,” Daria said.

“I'm not sure that will work,” Jane said.

“I'm going to ask anyway. I can be quite stubborn,” Daria said.

“We've both seen that,” Jennifer murmured as she turned into the Lane's driveway.

Wednesday, October 27, 2005

Quinn entered the Programming Club meeting, followed by Wolfgang Shuhardt “I could drive you to the Mall of the Millennium, Quinn,” he said.

“How did you know about that?” Quinn asked with surprise.

“I was talking to Xavier in Computer Studies; he mentioned that you had asked if he would drive you there,” Wolfgang said.

“Oh?” Quinn asked. 'He should really have not told Wolfgang,' she thought.

“He said that he wasn't sure that he would go.”

“If you can take me that would be great!” Quinn said.

“I'll see if I can borrow my mother's car.”

“You can get back to me by tomorrow night,” Quinn said. 'Cool,' she thought, hoping that Wolfgang's mother's car was something relatively new (or a classic like Jennifer's).

“I hope I will be able to.”

After school, Daria knocked on the faculty office door. The head history teacher, Mr. Anthony DeMartino, opened the door. “Ms. Morgendorffer, to what do I owe the pleasure?” he said.

“Is Mrs. Bennett here?”

“She is, I'll send her out.”

 Mrs. Bennett soon came out.

“What is it, Daria?” she asked.

Why are we going on a field trip to the Mall of the Millennium?” Daria asked.

“I stated the reasons in class,” Mrs. Bennett said.

“Yes, but there are malls much closer,” Daria said.

“Malls that you are familiar with, Daria. Take a chance, make a small mistake, but minimise the mess, we're going on the field trip.”

Daria tried to argue.

“Is it the place of the school to preach the consumerism aspect of our culture?”

“I don't know what you mean, Daria,” Mrs. Bennett said.

“I mean what I said, Mrs. Bennett!” Daria said.

“And so Mrs. Bennett wouldn't change her mind. The only way I can think of to make a real protest would be to blog about it,” Daria said as she and her two friends ate pizza at the Pizza King.

“Absolutely,” Jane said.

“But there would be no way for it to get on Slashdot. Although maybe Technorati,” Jennifer said quietly.

“Somehow, I don't think it's meme-worthy enough,” Daria said.

“So, we're going to the Mall of the Millennium. No big deal,” Jane said.

“It just won't be enjoyable,” Daria said.

“I agree with that,” Jennifer said as she took a bite of pizza.

As Stacy went to bed she wondered what the trip to the Mall of the Millennium on Friday would be like. 'I hope Sandi will allow me to shop where I want!' she thought as she went to sleep.

Thursday, October 28, 2005

Quinn entered Mr Fun's Games, Cafe and Internet 15 minutes after leaving school. “Quinn?” Koichi 'Rob' Robazaki asked.

“Yeah?” Quinn asked.

“I can take you to the Mall of the Millennium, Quinn,” Rob said.

“How did you know about that?” Quinn asked, surprised. 'Does everyone know that I'm going to the Mall of the Millennium?'

“Jenna told me,” Rob said.

“I should have guessed,” Quinn said, knowing that Jenna and Rob were close. (How close, she wasn't sure.)

“Yeah,” Rob said.

“I'm still waiting to hear from a couple other people,” Quinn said.

“Ok, who?” Rob asked.

“You don't need to know,” Quinn said.

“I don't?” Rob asked with a frown.

“I will hear back from them tonight. I'll give you a call if I don't,” Quinn said.

“That's cool,” Rob said as Quinn went towards one of the arcade machines.

Later that night, Quinn waited for Wolfgang and/or Xavier to call whilst doing her homework.

The clock on her Windows PC changed to 10:00.

She stood up. “Ugh! I will have to call Rob, after all,” she said as she grabbed her cell phone.

“Hi, is this Quinn?”

“Yeah, Koichi?”

“Yeah, Quinn?”

“You can take me to the Mall of the Millennium tomorrow.”

“That would be very good, Quinn.”

“I would like to leave Lawndale by 8:30, so there will be plenty of time for shopping when we get there.”

“That is ok. I usually leave home by 8:00, so I will be at your place by 8:15 at the latest,” Rob said.

“Cool,” Quinn said.

“I will see you in the morning,” Rob said.

“See you then, bye,” Quinn said, and hung up. She then continued her homework.

A Different Look at 1111 (3)

 A Romantic Night?

The doorbell rang. Daria opened the door. “Hi, Tom,” she said. They then discreetly kissed.

“Hi, Daria. So, what was this romantic spot you wanted to show me?” Tom Sloane asked.

“Um, upstairs,” Daria said.

When the couple emerged onto the first floor, they heard the Fashion Club talking in Quinn's room.

“Why does one of them sound like they are on a speaker phone?” Tom asked.

“She broke her leg, apparently she doesn't want to be seen,” Daria said.

“Rigtht,” Tom said, as Daria led him to the guest room.

“What's so romantic about the Guest Room?” Tom asked as they entered the guest room.

“It's not the guest room itself, it's where it leads to,” Daria said enigmatically.

Tom wasn't sure of what to say.

Daria opened the closet and pulled him in.

“Um, Daria, what are you doing?”

Daria grabbed a nearby coat hook and turned it. Tom could then hear some rumbling.

“What's that?”

“Wait, Tom, oh, and lean against the back of the closet,” Daria said.

“What?” Tom looked out of the closet and saw that the part of the guest room ceiling close to the closet was retracting. 'That's weird,' he thought. He then felt a jerk as the closet rose, then swung so that he and Daria were on their backs on the back of the closet. “What's happening?”

“In a few seconds, we will be above the roof,” Daria said.

Indeed, Tom could see the roof retracting, thus showing the night sky, with a few stars visible which could outshine Lawndale's light pollution.

After another two seconds, the closet rose towards the sky. About five seconds later, it stopped, and railings rose above the edges of the closet.

Daria got up first. She held out her hand. “Are you going to get up?” she asked.

Tom grabbed her hand “Sure,” he said, sheepishly.

When he got up, he and Daria looked out over Lawndale. “Wow, you're right, this is romantic,” he finally said.

Daria gave him a peck on the cheek. “I thought you would say that,” she said.

“But, how does this, closet-platform work?”

“The house belonged to a stage magician before it belonged to the family with the psychotic relative. This platform and my room are not the only parts of the house that are unusual.”

Tom looked to the north. “There are more mechanisms like this?” he asked.

Daria also looked to the north and glanced at what could be seen of the Big Dipper. “I will show you them later,” she said.

“But how do we get down?” Tom asked.

“By pushing one of the railings to the side, the one with the word 'push' on it.”

“Cool,” Tom said as he gave his girlfriend another kiss.
