1.07 The Metaphysical Engine, or What Quill Did review
Detailing what Quill did while the students were 'detained', this is
an interesting episode. But does it hold up? Actually it does. Quill
goes through the wringer as she undertakes a mysterious journey. The
Headmistress takes her on a journey to obtain the resources needed to
remove the parasite from her brain. However, a major question is:
what are the Governors up to? Why did they send the headmistress and
their shapeshifter prisoner on this perilous quest? Will the question
be answered by the next episode?
Another sci-fi reference clash: The parasite is referred to as an
'Arn'. An 'Arn' is also a period of time, equivalent to an hour, in
Farscape. However the episode focuses on Miss Quill's journey,
in many senses of that word. The headmistress (Dorothea) has some
kind of metaphysical engine that the Governors have given her (based
on Time Lord technology? There are parallels in the design with the
TARDIS). Miss Quill faces the journey with incredulity as they go to
places that should be impossible.
(Places generated by belief? Interesting idea, but such has been
depicted in the Whoniverse before, and was an important plot point in
some Discworld novels. The climax in the Cabinet of Souls
shows how determined Quill can be to survive and to get what she
wants. It also shows to what lenghs the Governors are prepared to go
for whatever their agenda is. The best episode so far. 9.5/10.
