Astronomy hadn't advanced to the point where the Cloud
could be picked up ahead of time.
The cloud was just that, a cloud. But it was of various
strange materials, and the path it took around the middle of the Milky Way
would intersect with that of the Solar System, and eventually, Earth.
It would be a new age. An Age of Heroes. And of
Villains...
The
impact of the cloud as meteorites is the cause of the rise of metahumans through
the year.

The
meteor shower is first noted in the town of Winchester in northern Maryland,
where the Military secures the First Meteor on the day after New Years.
From
there, the reports of strange events keep coming in.
In mid
January a metahuman calling himself Greenboy is ‘fighting crime’ in Chicago.
President
Ford reports that NORAD hadn’t picked up the meteor shower in advance.
Back in
Winchester, early in February a 12 year old girl manages to sneak through to
the meteor on a dare. She falls unconscious and is taken to the hospital where she
would remain in a coma. Her friend who would spend most of the next month at
her bedside would suddenly have visions…
Later in
February, two teenagers gain their powers while on a Concorde on approach to New
York.
It’s not
just humans affected by the meteors, a meta-lizard with superspeed is reported
in California and a meta-toad in Hawaii.
But
events get out of hand, with the NYPD going on strike in mid September.
In mid-November,
Xanthe Griffith, a Boston college student discovers she can project illusions.

Uganda, there are attempts at exorcisms of metahumans, starting in early
February.
Also in
February, Jane Goodall documents the emergence of meta-chimps.
