His friend, Melanie Grey, turned at the sound of her name. “Elias,”
she said as reply.
“Have you read the uni newsletter?” he asked.
“Yes,” Mel answered.
“Your opinion?” he asked.
“Reserved,” Mel responded. “The uni needs the money, but
Kelsington's record isn't good.”
“It isn't at all.”
Elias had got his lunch and then came back. “I have read online at
various netchives, and newspaper articles. That is how I know about
Kelsington's history regarding being pressuring on unis that they
have given grants to.”
“I believe you, Elias. But what are you going to do about it?”
Mel asked.
“There is an SRC meeting tonight. I'll bring it up then,” Elias
answered.
“Of course,” Mel said.
“I have some of the netchives databased, it should be easy to print
out the relevant e-pages.”
“Good,” Mel said as she took a bite from the chicken bundle.
The Mara Green College Student Representative Committee held it's
meeting at 6:00 PM, during dinner.
As Dining Hall and Amenities Officer, Elias was usually the fourth or
fifth fifth to report.
“...And the planning for the International Night is well underway,”
he said as he concluded his report.
“Thanks, Elias,” President Anna Howe said.
“However, there is something else that needs to be reported on,”
he added.
“And what is this?” Anna asked.
“You have heard of the offer by Kelsington International of a grant
to the uni?” Elias asked, looking around at the other student
representatives.
“Yes,” Matt Carlson, Communications Officer, said.
“Yes,” Julia McDonnell, one of the Freshman Representatives
answered.
“So?” Jenna Landers, the Vice-President asked.
Elias took the printouts out from beneath his report. “These are
reports from the universities that thave been affected by KI's
overbearingness,” he said.
“Overbearingness?” Anna asked.
“Sorry. I wouldn't have been succinct otherwise,” Elias said as
he handed Anna one of the reports.
She took it and glanced over it. “I have heard of this, and similar
cases. But as an SRC there isn't much we can do to influence the
Vice-Chancellor's decision.”
“I know that,” Elias said, as he handed out the rest of the
printouts.
“So you want us to protest against the grant?” the treasurer,
Parminder Sangha, asked.
“Yes,” Elias said.
“I agree,” Anna said.
Jenna looked at Anna, “You want it put to a vote?” she asked.
“Yes,” Anna answered. “Where Mara Green leads, the other
colleges might follow,” she added. Jenna nodded.
“Let's take a vote. Do we protest the notion of the University
obtaining a grant from Kelsington International?” Jenna asked.
The Student Representative Council took a vote. The result was that
they would not pass a motion protesting the the idea of the
University obtaining a grant from KI.
“That was disappointing,” Elias told Anna as they left the common
room after the meeting had finished.
“These things happen, Elias,” Anna said.
“True,” Elias said. “But there are other ways to influence the
policies of the university...”
“I'll get in contact with the other college presidents,” Anna
said.
Elias nodded.

August 2004
Elias entered the College Dining Hall after a couple of classes. Mel
and their friend Cara Eaves waved him over.
“The report about last night SRC meeting is interesting,” Cara
said when he had came over.
“How? I failed,” Elias said.
“Not entirely. It almost passed.”
“That's
not going to be effective. Kelsington is going to have it's horse
through the gate if the students don't get together and oppose that
grant.”

Quinn

to look into forming some kind of club to talk about stuff.”
“Sound's
