of the Defiant)
You are on the Federation starship Defiant about twenty light
years from Earth. Mokocchi, er, Tomoko here doesn't speak English and
no Japanese for me, so if you know it, let's stick to French. Doesn't
really matter here though.”
“Enchanted, I'm sure,” Kim answered. “Sorry, I'm not buying it.
Are people going to jump out of doors and shout, 'Happy Birthday'? No
one cared much before. Hey, if you wanted to do a theme birthday, I'm
more of an Orphan Black girl myself.”
Daria nodded.

“Eleven
years we've been married. We chose this ship together. He keeps me
honest, so I don't want false hope.”
“The
parasite's too aggressive. Your husband's gone. There's no way back.
I'm sorry.”
“Thank
you,” McDonnell said.
“Are
you certain nothing happened to provoke this? Nobody's working on
anything secret? Because it's vital that you tell me,” the Doctor
said.
“I
know every inch of this ship. I know every detail of my crew's lives.
There is nothing,” McDonnell admitted.
“Then
why is this thing so interested in you?”
“I
wish I knew.”
“We're
through to area seventeen, Doctor,” Felicia reported.
“Keep
going,” the Doctor said, “You've got to ge to area one and reboot
those engines.”
“Come
on!” Riley cried. “Everything on this ship is so cheap.” He
heard a sound behind them, “Who's there?”
Someone
appeared through the smoke that had permeated the area. “Is that
Korwin?” Felicia asked.
“No,
wait a minute.” Riley said. “Oh, Ashton, what are you doing?”
“Burn
with me!”
“Uh
oh!” Felicia said. “We need to go!”
“What?”
Riley asked.
“Burn
with me! Burn with me!”
“Something
is wrong!” Felicia said. She opened the door to a small adjacent
area and pulled Riley in.
“What
is happening on this ship?” Riley asked.
“Clearly,
more than one person has been affected,” Felicia answered. “But
where are we?”
“Airlock
sealed. Jettison Escape Pod.”
“Oops!”
Felicia said.
“Pod,
Jettison initiated.”
“Doctor,
we're stuck in an escape pod off the area seventeen airlock,”
Felicia said. “We need help!”

“How?” Felicia wondered.
“After our break from Earth, I added some 'surprises; to the
Station's systems,” Garibaldi answered. After Ambassador Mollari
had gotten on the bad side of some Technomages the year before, he
was very eagar to call in some favors to get rid of the 'spell'
malware.

“That
would suggest she is preparing either to run for her life, or to
fight for her life,” Engin explained.
“But
she can't be, can she? Who or what is she fighting?” Spandra asked.
“Clearly
somethin,” Samson answered.
“Presumably
another mind,” Engin said.
“You
mean there is another living mind in the Net?” Spandra asked.
“That's
exactly what it is,” Samson blurted.
“We're
only speculating, understand,” Engin said.
Net
A
person dressed as a game hunter shot at the Profesor, but missed. The
Professor continued to run.
“Water,
she's going to need water,” the hunter said. She went off, leaving
her equipment behind. The Professor soon found it, and booby trapped
it. When the hunter returned, she is nearly caught in an explosion.
“It
didn't get her. If it did, this nightmare would have ended.”
“Alright,
Profesor, A good try, but not good enough,” the hunter said.
The
Professor arrived at a pool. Soon, there was another confrontation.

Room
A
guard entered the room.
“Yes?”
Spandra asked.
“Message
from the Chancellor, sir. She'd like the Professor brought to her.”
“Impossible.
She's busy,” Samson interjected.
“Who
are you?” the guard asked.
“Solia,
is it?” Spandra asked.
“Yes,”
the guard, Solia, answered.
“This
is the Professor's assistant,” Spandra said, indicating Samson.
“You'll
have to wait. I'll be over soon, one way or the other,” Engin said.
