Part 7
As Daria headed to her next class, she
thought about what Jane had said regarding Ms. Defoe. ‘I’ll talk to her at some
point,’ she decided. It was bound to be significant.
Jen found one of her friends as they
arrived at the next class. “Tananda!” she called.
Tananda turned. “Yeah?” she asked.
Jen handed the sketch to Tananda. “Someone
is looking for those who broke into the Coffee House.”
Tananda looked at the sketch. “This is
really good.”
“But have you seen the person?” Jen asked.
Tananda shook her head. “No.”
“Then I’ll have to ask someone else.”
Another class period passed and more
students looked at the sketches. Many suggestions were made. Daria took note of
all of them.
Quinn paused as she moved between classes.
Those three boys still hadn’t seen the sketches! She looked around, and found
one of them. “Jeffy!”
“Quinn,” Jeffy responded.
“Have you seen this person around school,
or elsewhere?” Quinn asked, as she held out the sketch.
Jeffy grabbed the sketch. “I haven’t seen
him,” he said. “But I will keep an eye out for him.”
“Thanks,” Quinn said. “Take it. Show it to
Joey and the other one.”
“Sure!”
Jeffy hadn’t recognised the person, Quinn
considered, but Joey or the other one might. In any case, she had already
committed the sketch to memory. Years of detective work alongside Daria had
honed her memorisation skills.
Daria entered the cafeteria for lunch. She
quickly saw that the sophomore members of the Mystery Club were all there,
albeit at different tables. She sighed and went over to where Jane was sitting.
Jane looked annoyed. Daria suspected why.
“Miss Morris?” she asked.
“Bingo!” Jane said darkly. “Sometimes I
wonder why she has it in for my family. Such spite! Therefore, detention this
afternoon!”
“Oh!”
“It won’t be too long!”
Daria wasn’t sure how to react to that,
other than asking “You want to talk about it?”
Jane shook her head. Daria could see the
resentment there. She sighed and went to get her food.
